Spacesuit replica maker Ryan Nagata brings to the cave several of his spacesuits and spacesuit parts he made for the movie First Man! Adam and Ryan talk about his build of the X15 suit seen in the film, the technical accuracy achieved by the costume department, and what he learned from making pieces to be filmed for camera.

I would purchase and probably obsessively read a book by Ryan about minute and nearly forgotten space suit engineering and facts. I could spend hours just reading tiny details and facts about the evolution of the suits and the reason why. I think it would be cool to preserve that information so we never lose it.

Believe what you wish conspiracy theorists and status quo theorists. But the Moon’s sunlit surface is 260 degrees fahrenheit (daytime) and -280 degrees fahrenheit (nighttime). Chicken cooks at 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Beef: at 160. But astronauts are immune to being cooked, I conclude.

It got me wondering too. I recognize it from a DE-vid channel called Xiaomify, he uses almost the same logo. Nevertheless, it's a coincidence I reckon.

Stayed for the First Man credits, looked for Ryan N.'s name in the credits and did not see it. Did I overlook it? Seems like he did enough work to be credited, unless I really misunderstand the way credits work.

too bad this movie TANKED... it was filmed in a earthquake.. shaky camera all over the damn place.. even during the moon landing.. and the landing was smooth.. not to mention being a depressing movie... and inaccurately portraying all the astronauts..

I want to see someone in a genuine NASA spacesuit (old or new) placed in a vacuum chamber, moving freely carrying out delicate maintaince work (as performed in space) Recent experiments carried out by private research demonstrated that an air filled glove placed in a small vacuum chamber, became incredibly stiff with zero flexibility. Hmmm?

I so wish Ryan would have been on set everyday to fix all the errors. Overall the technical parts were much better than I expected. But I just didn't like characters. Best one seemed to be Deke. Here's a list of picky things. X-15 scene shows him being released in a cloud deck. Hardware on the cabinets in the house were wrong era. There was a 3 prong grounded outlet in the house. Trashcan at KSC firing room had a trash bag in it. All surfaces in the ships looked grungy even though they had come out of clean rooms. The end of the Fire scene. Recliners during suit up had new hardware. CG of J-2 engines had lots of missing hardware. Houston monitors were flat. Ok, I feel better now. Thanks

With you on those things. I also noticed the X-15 release clouds, the recliner hardware. Also, mission control room seemed too small.

Most of the NASA space program is a hoax. The Achilles Heel of the NASA hoax is the NASA spacesuit with ice sublimator cooling system because it could be scientifically verified on Earth today. NASA must publicly demonstrate before independent witnesses the operation of a NASA spacesuit with ice sublimator cooling system in a vacuum chamber on Earth duplicating environmental conditions of orbit. NASA refuses to verify and has always refused to verify its spacesuits with sublimators because they can't verify them because they've been committing fraud against the Citizens of the United States for more than 50 years. Plenty of NASA videos of spacesuits in swimming pools exist but there are none of spacesuits with sublimators in vacuum chambers although there is one video from 1966 of a NASA spacesuit without sublimator failing in a vacuum chamber causing a near fatality. If NASA regularly uses the spacesuits with sublimators on spacewalks from the ISS as they allege and regularly tests the spacesuits with sublimators in vacuum chambers at NASA's Johnson Space Center as they also allege then it should cost nothing extra and create no unacceptable inconvenience to allow a few witnesses to observe the next test. The NASA space program is a faith-based thing and that is totally unnecessary. Unless, of course, they have a scam to protect.

To the trolls in this comment section, you disgrace the whole concept of the movie and thus yourselves. This was a movie about Neil Armstrong. And the defining words he said were "This is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind". Humble words for a great achievement. Good presentation Adam and Ryan !!!

I am SO happy Ryan got to work on this and his skill REALLY shows in those closeups of his work. In the day and ago of "Good enough, we'll CGI the rest in post." It's nice to see a production reach out to a true craftsman like Ryan Nagata not just for his scholarly knowledge of the subject matter, but for entire pieces and costumes. You've come a long way from just making cool replicas for enthusiasts, collectors, and museums, Ryan. I hope he really does start writing this stuff down & the processes involved, for anyone following in his footsteps and the rest of us artsy types that just need that proper touch of real to refer in our sci-fi works.

Good point on writing stuff down. The people who made the stuff made it to work and might not recall the details now. Same for the people who wore them. Just like a war vet won't recall the number of rivets on their pistol belt but the collectors will, guy like Ryan and Adam are the ones who'll know this info when all is said and done.

I loved First man and the props. Noticed the knobs and switches in the capsules were weathered, like you might see them now in the museum. Some of the knobs were even grimey. Question: wouldn’t the knobs THEN have been clean, especially in the 11 capsule at launch?
rob yuille
rob yuille Vor 10 Tage
Yes! I thought they got everything spot on apart from that. Everyone in clean suits during manufacturer. ..they would tumble the LM to shake out the smallest debris before final assembly. ..then you see all the dials in the command capsule all soiled and messed up( Ok on the return journey things could be more worn but not on the pad). I know the were just trying to show the "rivets and all" 60's era tech....but it was a glaring clunky moment for me in the film. Everything else was incredible!
