Commenting on the prize, Stewart said, “I am truly honored to receive this award. I have long admired and been influenced by the work of Mark Twain, or, as he was known by his given name, Samuel Leibowitz.”

The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters, Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social injustice and personal folly.

As a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Stewart received a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). Previous recipients can be seen by scrolling down this page.

The 23rd Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is under the direction of the creative team from Done + Dusted, the Kennedy Center’s producing partner for the Mark Twain Prize since 2018. This year’s ceremony marks the 23rd year that the Kennedy Center’s marquee comedy award will be broadcast nationally.

The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception in 1998.

@LacklusterOfficial In my opinion Chapelle's contemporaries worth also checking out are: Bill Burr, Louis CK as well as late Norm Macdonald and Patriece O'Neil. They each have their own unique brand of humor but they are all masters of comedy. Alongside Chapelle they belong to the top shelf.

That isn't a joke, that is one of the most sincere heartfelt things Dave could say. His punchlines are slipped in so subtly they worm their way under your anticipation and slap you in the face. It's like the opposite of thunder and lightning. You hear the words, but the laughter takes a second to come in. With other comedians, your mind sees the punchline coming a split second before the joke lands, so your expectations soar instantaneously. Your guard is up subconsciously, even if you don't want it to be. The joke can't help but be deflated a little by being compared to your peak expectation. Chappelle has that shifty jab that hits you between the eyes and is already gone before the feeling can set in. And all you can do is laugh about it.

There's a reason these two men have always been two of my most drawn to comedians. In a world where people push their agenda at times and try to ignore the other side to make their points, these two both have always been so intelligent in what they want to get across and how they feel about things. Some of the best political interviews for me ever were done by Jon Stewart on the Daily Show. Even those you knew he strongly opposed he conducted those interviews so kindly and so professionally. He didn't try to put them in a bad spot instead he sat there, sometimes far past the actual tv time and just talked to them. Its like both sides by the end of the interview had learned something from it.

A newer one I would recommend is Daniel Sloss. He has 2 specials on Netflix, equal parts heartbreaking, insightful and hilarious. Almost Ted Talks level. Just make sure to watch Puzzle second, I think they have them out of order on there (or they did when I watched them). I think the storytelling type of comedy is an amazing artform but you have to be so engaging to pull it off.

And the town of Yellow Springs was going to be the one paying the bill for the "affordable" housing - the developer only ever cared about possible ways to blast the valuation of any single family homes.

I don't know if you've followed Dave from the start but to see how much he's changed and molded his craft, his delivery is amazing. He most definitely slowed his pace down, cadence so different from his "higher pitched", quicker material. There's a part of me that misses that older type of Chapelle delivery and I miss those type of "silly" jokes being more part of his repertoire, but still amazing to see how an artist can change, and challenge his stage persona as a means to travel to the version of him we see today.

It's obvious how these two guys love and respect each other. Dave is such an amazing storyteller and orator. Another thing I noticed is how much John's wife laughed and enjoyed herself throughout. To your points though, it wasn't as much about what he said, as it was the way he said it. She said "I'm 17" and he very awkwardly responded with "coool"...With a strange awkward pause and smile after clearly making her immediately uncomfortable. I mean everyone in the room knew why he said that. Whether it was more about the silence after or the comment itself is irrelevant to me, as I PERSONALLY see that as creep 101. What's so "cooool" about her being 17 and glaring at her akwardly after that for a good 5 seconds? Why was that a moment worth making? Let her answer that she's a minor, maybe show that you're impressed in what she's achieved so young, then move on. But no he proceeded to do that, and then show her in the Aerosmith video where she was inherently sexualized by the group(would hope you wouldn't disagree with that as they actually got in trouble for that, I belive by either hers or the other teenage girl who appeared in the videos parents).
