I am an Astrophysics major (although this knowledge isn't from a class), we don't currently know of any stars large enough to create a GRB that are pointed at us and close enough to cause mass extinction level damage. The closest possibility is WR 104, a Wolf Rayet star (basically a star that's so big and powerful that it's blasting off a sizeable fraction of its mass in its solar wind, although there are other traits), which is pointed vaguely towards us and very large, but it's not certain that it will create a GRB (one originating in a high metallicity star would be unusual) and only certain attempts to measure its axis have shown it as anywhere near pointed at us, other methods have found it pointed well to the side and therefore not a threat. Short duration GRB, which are created by colliding neutron stars, would be harder to identify as those are small enough that us failing to detect them is a real possibility at the ranges close enough to be a threat, but those are even more rare, and release less energy than long duration ones.

I had a dream about this happening but it wasn't exactly the same, it was a cosmic ray that pulsated heat waves of increasing intensity apparently microwaves that turn infrared. I had to stay in a car to not die. It was crazy because I felt the heat. It caused severe raining but ironically this kept it from continuing to grow very hot but I still felt the heat pulses. Just so you guys know, a gamma ray photon has energy of 1.24 MeV, and a red light photon has just 1.9 eV of energy The Binding Energy of a an iron atom is 8.8 MeV, so 7 gamma ray photons are enough to LITERALLY smoosh an iron atom, JUST SEVEN E=hc/wavelength or 1242/wavelength(in nm) where we get E as eV (electron Volt) 1 eV = 1.6^-19 Joule

I just had a thought. If black holes compress matter through high gravity to a single point in space, wouldn't that create another sun or something even more dense like a neutron star, due to the insane gravitational pressure. We also know that gravity is also not directly linked to energy and that time and space warps due to large clumps of energy. The more the mass, the bigger the black hole. What if the black hole's gravity pressure could be so high and that it compresses neutrons so hard that neutrons start to fuse? How would that work?

What I now would like to understand is if that GRB becomes, like said in the video 100 light years across, does that mean the distance the ray travels up and down becomes longer or are more GRBs“ created” somehow to take up that 100 lightyears or is there something else I am missing. If that doesn’t make sense it’s probably because I don’t know what I’m talking about but I hope someone can understand and explain/direct me in the way to the answer

You should make an update to this video. In 2017, the source for short GRBs was confirmed by direct observation of gravitational waves, gamma rays, x-rays, visible light and infrared. An interesting topic for such a video could be why we can't detect dangerous gamma-ray precursors in our galactic neighborhood with the current generation of gravitational wave detectors, and when we will be able to detect them.

I really like your videos, but there is something wrong with the alternating fields in the beginning of the video. I'm actually puzzled, you research very well to get a very complicated fact right, yet such a simple detail passes without noticing.

The Idea that there might be a day where out of nowhere a sun-like lazer crashs into earth and desintegrates us all without we ever acknowledging it's existence is the perfect source of cosmic horror that I didn't need today

If GRBs are created by supernovae and neutron star mergers, how can one claim that they contain all the energy of every star in a 100M Lyr radius? One stars energy is enough to create a supernovae, and therefore a GRB, by definition. A neutron star merger may be more energetic than that, but more than a couple thousand galaxies worth of stars? I don't think so.

What if a black hole is just a structure of space that accelerates particles, as accelerators do at the Earth, and emits them in form of radiation. There is no mass inside the black hole, only a specific space arrangement that accelerates the speed of "falling" matter up to light and throw it away as energy.

Pokemon took place before the GRB extinction event. Adam and Eve were the only remaining humans after the event and most pokemon we're familiar with went extinct.

Why do the gamma rays reduce the range of habitable planets? Are planets that are more generally bombarder, or do they lack an ozone layer in the atmosphere?

2:06 DARPA is a huge part of why you can even enjoy this Internet content. It was originally a US military research project that led to ARPAnet, a sort of ur-Internet, and eventually became ever so MUCH more as talented individuals inside and out of DARPA created things like e-mail, the World Wide Web (started at CERN), and other important elements of what we now consider integral parts of online existence.

Part of me hopes we're wrong about all this. That we've got physics themself wrong, that we've fundamentally misunderstood the vast cosmic horror that is space.

GRBs are normally pointed perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy it goes off in, so you are very unlikely to be hit by a GRB from your own galaxy.
