We love electric rideables. Hoverboards, skateboards, scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, unicycles, tricycles… You name it, we’ve ridden it. But electric bikes belong in a category of their own because they are more than just a fun tech fad. They could actually be the future of transportation. That said, there’s a lot to choose from out there, and you don’t want to get fooled, so here’s what you need to know.
Around 5:20 in the video, we say that in Europe, class 1 e-bikes are the most popular. Actually, the most popular e-bikes in the EU are unregulated with motors rated at 250W.

Would you replace a car with an electric bike?
Resplendent Moron
@Ben Jones You can own a car for that, but use a bike for shorter trips.
Resplendent Moron
@Dirk Coppens My commute in Beijing was about half as long by bike as by car.
Resplendent Moron
@Ismael If you live in a non-bike-friendly city, but it has a street grid, you can reduce your risk by sticking to the surface streets and avoiding the arterials.

I think e-bikes are for newbies. I prefer riding real bike but I might need an ebike for cargo bike

Great video...I am a keen (regular) bike cyclist. My bikes are also US brands, however.... 8:28...US speak: "Bus" = "Loser Cruiser" That's why many Americans don't like taking buses. And fresh-out-of-college youngsters are driving their net worth. "Electric Bike" = "...??..." (probably something not good)

E-Bikes are a great way to get around but where can you securely charge them? Parkent Cycles is the first company to coming out with charging stations that can securely charge every e-bike on the market.

All of the changes ebikes are bringing to the way business are doing business happened in China 10 years ago.

Watt hours are not how much can be delivered in an hour (though watts and amps can give you that). It's delivering one watt of power for one hour. It's a rating of how long it can deliver a certain level of power.

How can you not talk about Japan here ? It’s everywhere around me here. I’ve been using one to go to work for 3 years. Very reliable, never sweaty, even though summer in Tokyo is so hot and humid. I’ve been saving a lot too.

I have been riding my ebike for months. Around 30k’s return trip. Ebike is my best commute to work in congested traffic and over crowded public transport. It takes me 5mins quicker plus i feel more productive and relax at work. But will this replace my car? Definately NOT..

Ebikes, escooters, has already impacted city transportations, w grid locks, traffic jams 30-60 bucks to park your car. You can rent a car, truck, ebike, escooter w a click of a app. Get there faster. Yearly breakdown : car payment : 6,000, insurance 2,500, registration ,1,000 fuel 1,500 parking 3,000 estimated cost 12,000+ a year.

Great video - expertly explained. I run an eBike tour company, so I know what I’m talking about 🙂 And on that subject, here’s my 5 cents: I totally get the advantages of mid-drive and of torque sensors (in fact I’ve got a bike with that set up, and it’s great). But if you want to experience the most fun (“wheeee”!) feeling on an eBike - go for a rear hub motor with a cadence sensor. And ideally with a throttle as well as pedal assist (if your country’s regulations allow that). Guaranteed fun! 😎

My primary form of transportation is an ebike and it really does make a lot of sense in a city like Portland where there is good enough infrastructure to make it work. It’s got me riding again where I had started to lean more heavily on public transit and now I barely use transit. I think price is a real barrier but if you are planning on going car free then it’s easier to justify the cost. People justify spending thousands of dollars on a lot of stuff it just depends on what you are looking to get out of it. Of course it will seem expensive if you are only looking at it as a toy or something for recreation....that’s fine of course but it really can work as primary transportation as long as you have the right gear to make it work.

i live in wichita ks. and the bike paths are often complemented by a walking path. but the walking path is direct while the bike path meanders back and forth, so i frequently end up riding on the walking path just because i am not riding for the scenic rout, but to get from point a to point b. this is just an example of how city planners have screwed up when it comes to bikes. they just don't seem to understand that bikes are for transportation, not just recreation.

One reason I stopped biking to work was where to put my bike. At work we didn’t have a specific indoor place. And locking it up outside was not safe. For some reason the area is safe but for bikes it’s like theft central. Any types on locking out door? Four locks? Or just need to find and indoor solution?

You know why Ebikes are popular...because they are fun and a viable solution for transportation needs. Not because of Climalunacy. Capitalism finds a solution based on making the alternative better,

I cycle to and from work through all four seasons of the year (in the UK). I have a full driving license, and I can afford a car, I just don't think it's worth it to have a car (for me personally, not applicable to everyone). The only reason I am hesitating getting an eBike is because I'll lose out on the fitness of riding my bike each day 😅 They look super fun though!

Ebikes have other uses, too. I like mountain biking, and I'm relatively fit. But the cardio strain of pedaling up a mountain makes trail biking really tough for me. Having that extra boost would help a lot of people who want to get out there but just can't

If you are younger than 50 and physically healthy then just get a regular bicycle. Many of the people riding e-bikes in Germany haven't been avid cyclists before and more often than not they aren't capable of properly controlling their machine. I'd say people should learn to actually ride bikes (I don't mean the basics of course, what I mean is real world experience) before jumping onto an e-bike. You're doing yourself and others a favor.

The biggest problem for e-bikes is theft, in places like victoria bc and vancouver there are bike thieves all over, thats the number one reason why i havnt gotten one yet, sure they are great for a joy ride but if you wanna take it downtown and go for a meal or a drink or coffee, theres a good chance your bike could get stolen if it's not within view for you.
