By the end of the 21st century, humanity is becoming desperate. Decades of heatwaves and droughts have led to unusually poor harvests, while the warming oceans yield fewer fish each year. In the tropical zones, millions suffer from famine and resource wars have made millions more flee to the north. As things quickly get worse, in an act of desperation, the world's governments decide to enact an emergency plan...
It is far from certain that a grim scenario like this will play out. But the failure of world leaders to effectively address climate change, makes it far from impossible.
So in the near future it might become necessary to try something radical to slow down rapid climate change: Geoengineering. Interventions so massive in scale that they might undo centuries of human behavior. Or make everything much worse.
What is geoengineering, is it really an option and what if it goes wrong?

I've heard before: If you had the capability to terraform Mars into Earth... then we could also terraform Earth into Earth! We are so focused on turning another hostile planet into something inhabitable and Earth-like, that we tend to forget the very ground we're standing on. I think it's a very good point, if you can't even save the home planet from yourself, what'd guarantee that you won't do the same thing to every other planets in the future?

I think you are forgetting that there are no people on Mars, therefore we can do all sorts of drastic things to it that can cause drastic changes. But we can't do the same with Earth because this is the only planet we have and is inhabited by millions of species, so we have to do small scale changes here and there without harming our own species (at the least) to solve our problems. Small changes lead to small outcomes plus if we screw up with Earth then we are gone but if we screw up another planet it is still a bearable loss. Therefore it is much more difficult to geoengineer Earth than to terraform Mars.
Joseph Coon

“Geo-engineering” is just an emotionally charged version of “Terra Forming.” If we can’t consciously adjust our own planet’s climate, what hope do we have for doing it to an exoplanet?

In a nutshell, clouding up the sky is only going to damage the upper reaches of our planet's spheres, so that it's in an even worse state later on. So obviously Geoenginieering is a last resort for if things get so bad that we can't engineer any sort of future unless we do it and everything would die otherwise.

One of my geology lecturers is a big advocate for geoengineering. He's angry about the lack of funding for it, and worries that by the time it might be needed, it would be too late. It's a super interesting concept to me, and I think some methods (such as carbon capture storage) are great ideas as most of the world continues to depend on fossil fuels in the future.

I strongly recommended people take the time to research the “iron hypothesis,” which was so quickly dismissed at the beginning of this video. This is one of those "TECHNOLOGY BAD. I SMART. SCIENCE SCARY. NATURE GOOD. INDUSTRY BAD. Don't bother posing arguments, the people who watch these videos will ignore reason because they are only interested in knowing what shitty thing they say about any given subject will make them sound the smartest. Therefore we must use trolling to change their minds instead.

Heres my idea, Use a dust cloud at 45,000ft over hot areas. The savings from air-conditioning could pay for the project, Dust launched on the west coast could travel East across the whole US cooling the whole county. Volcano and forest fire data could be used as a model. Dust is naturally occurring and lime dust has antiacid properties. Think about it, who wouldnt want their local weather to be less hot. The dust is temporary but lasts several years. The dust cloud can be managed either more or less by how many flights are done. Target areas over 100° and reduce temperatures to say less then 90°. Do local and regional territories. If there are problems, just stop and let the dust settle out, this should be a stop gap program to give cultural and technical change on earth to take hold, things like electric cars and solar and wind power have more time to develop. Accumulation of dust in the atmosphere over time would cool the entire planet. We need to start small and learn how to do this, Junk airliners can be converted to dusters for cheaper investment.

Pierre Verbakel

@FBI Not due to lack of sunlight, algae growth fixes oxygen in their biomass. E.g. the more algae, the more oxygen is taken up by them. At some point the algae will take up so much oxygen on the surface of the ocean that there's no oxygen left for deep water oxygen requiring species, such as fish.
FBI Vor 2 Monate
@Father Homie I think powdered iron makes algae grow really fast, but the algae would cover the surface of the ocean. Which, would prevent sunlight from reaching fishes and it would cause them to die because of the lack of sunlight.

Sulfur Dioxide is also a poison gas, so putting megatons of that in our atmosphere is a bad idea. Also, blocking out the sun means less sunlight for plants, which means less photosynthesis, which means less plants, which is not good.
Who wants to know?

Put me down for don't do it! I could see solar sails, in orbit, stopping much solar radiation from getting to Earth! Adding more aerosols to Earth's atmosphere, sounds counter intuitive to me, if carbon dioxide and methane gases, are part of the overall problem!
Notacet Vor 6 Monate
I’ve been thinking about this. The best gas would be such that it blocks infrared, but let’s visible light through. Thus it would drop temperature, but have minimal effect on photosynthesis. Is sulfuric acid such a substance?

Because of Geoengineering we have high levels of “metals” in our rain, snow, crops and food. And you can say goodbye to solar too.
R06U3_H4K3R Vor 5 Monate
Easy, do all the geoengineering stuff so we have more time and then the scientists who found all solutions will be put on a ship. Then that ship will go in space and we will tell them that "We are keep them safe in space and they can do research for other habitable planets." and then we just make the ship crash onto a planet like 4546B from Subnautica and there they can live and no other humans that will destroy the planet will be there. And how there should be at least one female they can also rebuild humanity.

Please encourage renewable energy, like wind, solar, thermal and hydro. Geoengineering could/ will have unseen consequences we never saw coming and can be much worse than climate change through fossil fuel burning, as it is already causing more extreme weather year after year. There are tornadoes accuring in middle europe as we speak, and hurricanes already existing in countries are getting worse and worse for humankind. Let's focus on real data and science and start to make changes alongside the good ones for renewable energy that are already happening, enforce the best energy production for earth's ecosystem that we inhabit and depend on. This is the only way for our children and grandchildren to grow up and experience the beautiful planet Terra is and hopeful, will be again more habitable. ❤

6:43 turn that c02 that was pulled from the air into hydrocarbons, and use it to fuel gas cars, creating carbon neutral vehicles out of any gas car that uses that synthetic gasoline. It wouldn't require people to buy electric cars, which would hurt the environment by their battery production, and it would allow people to use their car for longer and keep using their car for as long as it will run while not hurting the environment. Why isn't anyone talking about this?!
Dimetri Drossos
Dimetri Drossos Vor 6 Monate
@Tommy Kebschull porshe has already developed a fuel that does exactly this The only problem is since it has only been done by 1 company (plus audi in like 2014, but didn't do it again), and it hasn't hit mass production yet. It saves the cost of drilling and refining, but with the new cost of the process that creates it. But it's the equivalent to 100 octane gasoline, which is already expensive. So it really isn't that bad more, if at all more expensive than the equivalently rated gasoline. So the only real issue is getting enough funding to hit the mass market
