Half of the ordinary baryonic matter has been tough to find but Fast Radio Bursts made it possible to detect the WHIM. Thanks to Kiwico for sponsoring this video! For 20% off go to kiwico.com/veritasium or use code VERITASIUM at checkout.

Can we really say those computer simulations were correct? If scientists keep developing new ways to detect matter and keep improving the current techniques then is it not possible that we might find more matter, thus providing the theoretical value of the amount of matter that should be present to be wrong?

Hi Derek. Thanks a lot for this episode. I’m a geneticist and I wasn’t aware of this proportion of baryonic matter vs non baryonic matter. It recalls me somehow the proportion of protein coding vs non protein coding sequences both in DNA (2%) and in RNA (2-7%). Fascinating. Seems that the matter you see is the lowest proportion of a bigger picture. Cheers.

Fantastic video! The world desperately needs people like you, excellent scientific communicators, who can explain complex scientific problems in simpler and understandable terms. The amount of knowledge and information you compressed in under 15 minutes is mindbogling. The production is extraordinary. This material should be used in schools. Please keep up the good work!

The vast majority of what causes gravity in the universe is still to be explained, yet scientist have the gumption to claim they know what happened 20 min after the big bang. Intriguing video, but the balls of researchers is on Par with Priests.

i want bring something up that may have inspired photos.....when I was young I discovered my eyes photo sensitive nature. If I turn off the living room light and keep my eyes wide open and don't blink the light in the room comes back for an instant and you can see the lamp ...the couch ....the walls for a few seconds. I have played with my kids and they also saw this was true and fastenating. Anyone can do this but tou will be tempted to close them because it might burn a little but keep them open and you will see the light from the room return. This is how the imagination for photos were first thought of in my opinion. Have fun with that one.

VERITASIUM oh come on do you think people such stupid, light travel pretty, pretty long to reach the Earth, if you look into the deep space trough the telescope what do you see? YOU SEE ALWAYS PAST!!! Not present ! Light can bend and there for if some part of space not "eliminated" it does not mean that something critical is missing, we just dont see it in our telescopes and thats it! The title of this video definitely misleading, i put dislike on this video.

But how do you find what is beyond the observable universe? We don't know if there is even an end and some parts are moving away faster than the speed of light and will never be detected. How do you add up all the mass from planets and stars and gas clouds when there are new planets being discovered all the time. Even objects close to earth and our solar system are being discovered all the time. I'm guessing there is a lot of guess work and room for error. Being off by .0000000000000000000000001% doesn't really matter but 2.5% is a big deal. Then I come back to all the observable space and matter on the other side of the potato or doughnut universe.

Why whim are so hot from where are they getting so much energy
Clancy James
Clancy James Vor Tag
Two sources. Firstly: gravity. Matter falls into the huge gravitational well of galaxy clusters, then hits the gas that's already there. This generates a shock wave that gets rather hot. Secondly: some energy is input from galaxies themselves, injected primarily from jets of matter shooting out from close to the event horizon of supermassive black holes. But it's not as hot as gas in e.g. galaxy clusters.

couple of points here... Science is an observational sport, but these days theories and assumptions and spin rule... there's way too much bias and profit motive to believe most... which is a massive shame.. I wish science didnt put its reputation on the line for tenure... Also we need to do more observation and less guessing what it means, science ends up looking for evidence to substantiate claims rather than using double blind evidence to make conclusions, to be fair science is backwards.. Lastly science is about understanding the laws that we happen to observe. those laws are subject to change at any point and they can never tell us what existence is. that should be made clear in every scientific paper... Also there has been way too much bashing of those poor electric universe guys, that happen to have got some of this right.. those lads need a nobel prize for their efforts.. for putting up with the institutionalised stubborn Old wood..
