Even the large teambased games can suffer from skill difference. Just look at the battlefield games. I've joined several friends on BF4 servers all stacked on one team in vehicles, killing 1 server after another all night. Admins have to resort to banning good player or their servers die. I can't blame them either. I've seen a duo in the attack helicopter or 2 people in jets kill servers. the vehicles have such a high skill ceiling that even the hard counters DICE made against them aren't effective. Not to mention any new players that have no idea those counters exist. But even that doesn't technically make it "dead" it just makes the enjoyment of it significantly less for me and new players.

Honestly games that design themselves to support low player counts impress me. Also keep in mind, a player count of 6 gets you a full lobby in most games.

Ghost Recon Phantoms would probably still have a loyal playerbase if Ubisoft had just kept the few servers up.. Small playerbase was enough for that game. Still one of the best tactical team shooters there ever has been, even with its numerous bugs and game engine bottlenecks. Less than 100 players was enough to keep it interesting, it allowed multiple skill levels all feel useful in the team result. You didn't have to be the best to make a difference but you needed every single player to do their job. It was killed prematurely, because it really was only a testbed for free-to-play business model and they really took it to the limits and killed it. I feel bad for the dev team that really made the game mechanics good, despite overwhelming obstacles put in place by the console ported game engine. It was so beautifully balanced that it kept the small userbase engaged.

Really great video and channel, i fell into this while watching random multiplayer gameplay design/critique stuff, im now a handful of your videos in. Im a bit late to this but i saw the single frame from blade symphony and had to comment, I worked on the game while at puny human, and I can honestly say i feel like after how harsh we made the difficulty curve in dystopia, We didnt really learn enough of a lesson about smoothing that out for blade symphony. there are a bunch of things i would do to adjust that, and while im not involved in development anymore i have seen that puny human has made it free to play and have done some updates, i cant comment on if they address these issues as i havent checked it out

I think part of it is a lot of people now grew up in an era of free to play games on pc. There are several games I spent hundreds of hours on that I'll never be able to play again, despite there being plenty of players to get into matches right up until the plug was pulled.

I was still able to consistently find full lobbies on Black Ops 2 on steam as recently as April of last year... Although it was a bit inconsistent and did take time. That game is well and truly "dead" and has been for ages, but didn't stop me from finding games. That's why I'm not worried about this "huge" 16% player count drop in CS:GO which is utterly meaningless since it's still one of the top games on steam of all time.

I wish Battlefield 1 on console had a larger population. I feel like there are more games available on BF4 sometimes. My favorite game mode is frontline but almost never is there a server running with that game mode. Even on BFV some of the game modes are lacking in players and you just end up playing breakthrough or conquest. :/

I feel like the player population is only really important if the game has no server browser. I recently installed and launched SWAT4 SEF with a friend and although there were about 20 public servers with a total player population of under 50, we were able to start a game with 2 randoms in a matter of seconds, which wouldn't have been possible without the server browser. I think it's by design, too - if the COD from 2 years ago is still playable, why would you pay extra money to buy the new one?

I'd much rather have 1000 multi-player games with a 10000th (not a typo) of the total multi-player game population than the current distribution. It hurts a lot to see your game cross into death. And it hurts even more to have played other (endlessly more popular) games while you could be playing what you've now lost access to. It's not a good mindset but it's something that's there.

A feature that also helps a lot with regards to population, is bots. Even though they might not provide an experience as good as playing with other players, they at least allow the player to play while waiting for other human players to join. CS:GO does a great job at this. Even though it's far from dead, there are often times where the players in the lobby quit, and the game keeps going because of bots.

with regards to diabotical and quake-style shooters in general, a lot of that frustration could be alleviated if the games actually taught players how to fight from a position of weakness. you ARE going to be fighting from a point of weakness when you die in a 1v1, thats a fact, but teaching players how to abuse things like line of sight, or make the best use of normally pretty underwhelming weapons and even create advantageous situations from your weakened state are things these games can all do better with. quake-style shooters are only fun if you have an experimental mindset, you need to be willing to try off the wall/stupid stuff to make the most out of the game and your situation if you want to win or have fun at all. these games dont have tutorials, or if they do they are usually pretty bare bones, and thats normally not an issue but these games need to put more effort into incentivizing players to be creative in their approaches and reward them for it if they want to retain players long term. that being said the traditional method of "quests" that tell you to "get 5 kills with x weapon" are not going to be adequate for this. maybe a highlight reel like how Overwatch does it, but the highlight has a preference for weapon kills that are underpowered/off the wall. i dont know, there needs to be something but how things are right now are not adequate.

Here's my issue: more and more games make you invest long term with unlocks, cosmetics, skills, but when a player population is average, it makes me worried I invest tons of time in a game where matches might start becoming hard to start due to declining population. Population doesn't matter in pick up and play games without investment or unlocks to me, but investing hundreds of hours into a game that might start giving half empty servers just when I'm heavily invested: no

This whole video I was thinking of Ace of Spades; it's an eight year old rather classic shooter with voxel building (it came out in the early days of Minecraft popularity). The game got adopted from an indie studio to Jagex, who changed so much that by and large the players abandoned the new version. However, there is still an active community of probably a thousand or so players on open-source versions like OpenSpades and Build And Shoot, and there are normally two or three servers with 30 ish players on them. Each day there's probably a few hundred players online, just rotated by what time of day you join. So how does this game stay alive despite cripplingly low player count? I'm not sure for everyone, but for me the gameplay has this very classic and charming (and realistic) feel to it. The game has a very tight style of gunplay, much like your primary example of Red Orchestra. One or two shots is enough to kill you, an only one is required with the basic rifle. There are only three guns anyway, the rifle (instakill headshots), the SMG (more bullets and repeat fire but high recoil and relatively low damage), and the shotgun (spread of bullets, less ammo than the rifle and pretty niche, but very useful for tunnel or trench engagements). Most player engagements are over within a second. This ties in really well with the building and destructible terrain, as well as the 16 v 16 team size (although it could be a lot bigger). It feels almost like a perfect WWI game, minus the blocky retro aesthetic. Players build and take tactical areas of terrain, including digging tunnels and trenches, building small forts and walls, and of course on the Babel gamemode the tower up to the intel in the sky (its like capture the flag except the flag is in the middle and both teams have to build a tower up to it before the other does). Grenades help destroy structures and force people to look out in tunnels and rooms. Whole buildings can come down if a player tunnels under the supporting blocks, and theres a lot of sniping and machine gunning at towers and tactical constructions. All of this contributes to a game with a very unique style that feels very realistic despite the aesthetic, and includes both team coordination and a lot of sneaking solo into enemy territory to try and take out a bunch of snipers or a bunker. It still amazes me that this game is still surviving after so many years with only about 40-60 players online at any given moment, but the gameplay always brings me back to it every so often. I would really like you to do a video on it sometime!

Was playing SWTOR few years ago ( Before it started to lean towards single player ), soo I wanted to do raids in Dread Lords expansion, a bit AFTER majority of interested parties already farmed he heck out of it. Soo I tried for a week and my record was 7 consistent hours in a search queue with occasional screaming in chat. I just simply couldn`t find enough people to do a raid. ( That met all requirments aka level, willingness, gear, having a subscription(F2P players could not access raids)). And it goes to most MMORPG type of games, when first batch of players move to " endgame " old content comes into emptiness so if there is no influx of " newbies " then it comes to a roadblock that you cant go around without begging for help. So yeah, this genre is very tied to a term " popularity " and players count.

The problem for games like OW is that they are fundamentally competition based games, and when these games are alive it means that the skill level is evolving and even at the top level of skill it is possible to play the game to it's fullest extent. This applies to Starcraft, DOTA, CSGO, League, etc... These games are dying when the population declines, the player pool at the top of the ladders becomes too thin to find healthy games, and it spirals down the track you talk about of individual player agency getting out of control.

As a halo fan who was around for the roughly 5 year period that Halo 3 was the most played game on XBL, 5k players is practically dead. Halo should be a flagship system selling, now due to 343 it’s clawing at COD’s player base, and now the few who have jumped from CoD to Halo demand that Halo should continue down a path that’s already wrecked it’s sales and population numbers.

Slender Man 186
Slender Man 186 Vor 9 Monate
@1234567 what are you even talking about? This isn’t OG Reach where there actually were separate playlists for the DLC maps, you *have* to put up with them regardless of anything. What do you mean “it’s not that hard to play non-dlc maps?” I would prefer to never have to play Reach’s DLC maps, but knowing 343’s dumbasses if they were to implement a way, it would also turn off Halo 3’s DLC maps, which were actually quite good (aside from citadel). The PC players are indeed a problem. At long range, keyboard and mouse is downright Op, but up close the aim assist afforded to controllers can be similarly over powered. 343 should just keep kb&m players from playing with controller players.
1234567 Vor 9 Monate
@Slender Man 186 the dlc map part. They are part of the same playlist, so it would be the same with a higher player count right? And its not that hard to play non-dlc maps. Literally yesterday I played a few games of Reach Swat, no one left and no one was afk. Only problem was the PC players in the game but thats a different topic
Slender Man 186
Slender Man 186 Vor 9 Monate
@1234567 what’s not true about that? Anytime I join a match that’s what happens most of the time, pretty much all the time if I’m trying to play Reach Swat, my favorite game mode. Then there’s the main issue with online gaming as a whole nowadays, no one is on gamechat. Sure you can get a fairly normal match of Halo 3 Slayer, but no one will be talking to each other, and if you dare to get into a good old fashion s**t talk battle you’ll get communication banned.

Battlerite is the best example of why a certain amount of playerbase is needed for the game to be playable. At some point i was gold-platinum at this game, but with playerbase decline, i was constantly being matched against high diamonds, because they don't have enough players to play with, and this does not create a good gameplay experience. Any sort of battleroyale game can hide it, though, but even in those games it is noticeable. I was playing from open beta to season 3 of Apex legends, i skipped 2 or 3 seasons, came back and i can feel, see and hear the difference of each battle encounter i have. While being gold early seasons, each fight was a "great battlefield" against people of similar skill. But last two seasons i either shit on people or get shit on. I don't know how to explain it without bringing up 20 years of shooter experience, but i "know" when someone is higher tier diamond player, and someone is barely silver. Early seasons of Apex had great balance of player skill due to amount of players, this season has good game balance, but ranked doesn't feel balanced, because player either fail to use offered tools (low skill), or tear me apart because they are that good at the game.

Sometimes smaller pops make games more fun. There is something about gaining notoriety in a smaller community and making friends that way. It reminds me of the days of Half-Life 1; playing on the same dedicated servers where you'd see the same handful of people day after day and actually make friends. Now a days I find it hard to get motivated to game when I know it's most likely just going to be a lot of toxic encounters because players know there is little consequence for acting that way.

You know what? Every game dev interested in making a multiplayer game needs to see this. Considering how heated, mob like, and censorship-happy the internet is right now, this is important for game devs. People can be leeches and try to cancel a game over what is honestly the stupidest of reason. If you want make a game, you should try to make it by design or to some degree free from mob mentality, and also have a plan just in case someone wants to target your service providers.
