NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Where would you rather sleep?! Haunted Prison or Haunted Church. Choose your own adventure. Great to be back in the UK for the first time in 3 years! It's been far too long. This is the first video I've produced in the UK since Natsuki: The Movie in 2017! As always for behind the scenes outtakes, bloopers and making of, check out the Abroad in Japan Patreon: www.patreon.com/abroadinjapan
@Rodolfo it actually used to be known for very good food. The reputation of British food was shot to hell after WWII because they had to keep rationing until 1954.
@Crash Bash the irony is palpable... but sure, keep believing that a piece of fried cod is good food.. while you go to an italian restaurant next to the kebab joint and the indian restaurant across the street from the chinese restaurant and the sushi bar. I'm sure you're bound to run into a good old traditional english restaurant at some point though! maybe next to the greek one down the street? oh, no, that's where you've got nando's, the south african restaurant with a portuguese inspired menu... hm..
In the frame 26:45 where they’re explaining the woman in white story you can see in the far room a figure like out of a Japanese horror, all in white with long dark hair but no visible face squatting down in the corner. The weird thing was, in the close up shot she’s no longer in the background. I was waiting for their screaming as I figured it was another set up mannequin but nothing... Hmmm...
Chris: "The UK is one of the most haunted places on earth!", Me: Well of course it is! British people have made an artform out of complaining so obviously not even death could put an end to that!
You could probably remix all of Chris and Connor's complaining in this video, and like... stick it over an old The Smiths song, and it'd probably sound about right. This One Expensive Light That Has Just Gone Off - The Smiths featuring AbroadInJapan & C-DawgVA
1:25 "For Joey, I wanted him to get in touch with his Australian roots" I HAVE LITERALLY DIED LAUGHING AND GOT RESURRECTED SINCE I KNOW THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
I thought the same thing, in prison you get john Grisham and 3 free meals plus tv. Plus, at the Highland Park prison you get a 10$ fast food order they go get for you. I had Grandy's for breakfast then Taco Bell and Whataburger for dinner.
"Well, if I say, 'no,' you're just going to make me go anyway, right?" I mean, that's how prison works, yeah. Good job getting into the spirit right off, Joey!
people might do and play pranks and joke about death… they are being respectful. They aren’t jumping on church pews or breaking stuff. They seem like wonderful people.
The sea shell room is probably where people had confession before they started doing booths where you couldn't see each other. They stopped the room thing because preists were taking advantage of people confessing their sins.
This episodes proves that Chris can film anywhere outside of Japan and it will still be interesting, can't wait to see more stuff like these outside of Japan
First time watching Chris's vid in a while. Holy shite! It really is like a network TV quality and feel now. Unlike before where you see in interviews Chris say he's "trying". Now, it absolutely is!! This really is like a "Channel" now in it's traditional sense! This is just lovely, Chris!
As an American living in the UK (Wales in fact), I can confirm that the thing I'd miss most if I moved away from this fine country would be the Tesco Meal Deals. And the free health care I guess...
@Colin Newman better than being dependent to an expensive private insurance that don't even cover the medical cost to 100%, and still need to pay a lot in taxes.
@Colin Newman proportionally free, libertafash, in the US and my country Chile, you’d have to pay insurance , the medical expenses and still have to pay taxes on top of that
@Zachary Rodriguez "literally everyone knows its not actually fully free except US Republicans who think everyone is as ignorant as them." What does that even mean?
@Colin Newman literally everyone knows its not actually fully free except US Republicans who think everyone is as ignorant as them. We all understand free as free at the point of service, similar to roads.
Honestly in the prison the floor seems nicer then the metal bed Also I want to mention Joey Connor and Chris have all been so respectful in the videos. Unlike what some other people might do and play pranks and joke about death… they are being respectful. They aren’t jumping on church pews or breaking stuff. They seem like wonderful people.
@Kumo's dog Salad is still worse, despite how sad that meal deal was, salad is gross, boring and dressing is not seasoning, it's bland. Where's the herbs and spices? Who wants to sit and eat bland, watery leafy greens with other gross vegetables? Yuck.
oh wow... i ive in germany and in my city we have an old prison (it´s used as a sort of museum because it was used by the Nazi´s) that is exactly the same infrastructure wise. watching this brought back all the memories from the school trip we took there. the one here had additional examination rooms and gas chambers, the court is a bit different (smaller), but even the building itself looks similar! i still remember standing in one of the cells and reading the original log of a 14 year old boy that died in there and not being able to process that everything in there is preserved from back then.
I kept waiting for Connor and Chris to notice the graves in the floor of the church, which they didn't. (Googled afterwards to make sure I'd seen right and yep, those are memorial slabs, some of them with the name and date of the person buried beneath.) I wonder how that would have gone if they had noticed.
I would ABSOLUTELY stay in that prison; I adore urban exploration, being a regular at my local abandoned asylum, which looks remarkably similar to this!!
It's almost a bit emotional seeing Chris so clearly delighted to be back in the UK, actually helps instill a bit more appreciation that I get to call it home. It is surreal seeing you boys walking down the aisles in Tesco, or driving down clearly English roads surrounded by GRASS. Heard alot about the production of this video on the podcast, so my excitement is feverish that we finally get to see it!!
@ChemtrailCat The meal deal got me through some hard days at work, but once you get a slightly better wrap anywhere else you realise how shit they are. Especially compared on a channel like this where Chris shows how a 7-eleven has better main courses than some eateries in the UK.
The moment you said he's been longing for his favourite meal deal and then he finds the chicken bacon and stuffing. I gave a round of applause because that is, in fact, the best sandwich in the meal deal.
This is like one of those horror movies where DE-vidrs sleep in a haunted location for the content only for the place to really be haunted and the audience is secretly hoping the ghosts win.
Chris: it's eleven a clock and we’re gonna go out to look around the graveyard. That sounds like a great idea Chris! Wait till it gets dark THEN explore the graveyard 😅😄. But I mean I’m gonna enjoy seeing you do it 😄.
It's not about quality or taste. The miracle of the meal deal is simply its value, and the fact it is fairly dependable. It's like Wetherspoons. It's naff, but if you're in a new city and you're not sure where to grab food, you can be safe in the knowledge the familiar mediocrity is bound to be nearby, and it's going to be cheap.
There is a ghost story in one of the castles in Holland, that a girl was punished to spend her days in a dungeon cell covering the walls with shells and she had to stay until she finished. The minute Connor stepped into that little room full of shells, I was reminded of that story
Coming back in to watch this after I saw the video about it is wild! Y'all totally called it when you said there would be viewers who are going to notice something and to pause at such and such time haha! It's crazy though, the white lady appears at about 26:30, then if you keep watching as the light goes back over that spot, she's totally gone!
Just in case anyone fancies a stay in the church, it's St. James' Church in Cooling, Kent (not St Mary's Chris!). Love the very British take on "haunted places", the sarcasm to hide the fear next to the rage of disappointing sandwiches!
1:25 Chris: "For Joey, I wanted him to get in touch with his Australian roots" Me: Looking at the prison and brain starting to connect the dots, "he did not just facken said that".😂😂😂
1:25 "For Joey i wanted him to get in touch with his Australian roots and so i've arranged for us to stay inside Britain's most haunted prison." As someone from a commonwealth country, that really got the giggle out of me. 10/10 British humour.
The Tesco Meal Deal might be the most underwhelming thing to exist since the dawn of mankind. Dry sandwich, zero condiments, a sliver of "meat", brown lukewarm lettuce, 5 crisps, and a room temperature drink that you suspect has been opened and reclosed.
Tesco meal deal is part of daily working life in the UK. When you want a cheap and quick meal to get back to work thereafter. The sandwiches are not too bad
i'd love to sleep with a friend at a church like this, it seems so cool! Must be nice and fresh in the summer. I cannot at all see any eeriness or feel scared at all? It's just a very well kept old little chapel
Chris: gets an alarming message from his doctor, that his cholestorol is worringly high Also chris: Eats Fried fish and chips in the very first second of the very next video
There is a church in Wales that you can stay in where it still has all the pews and ancient features, but they've built a wooden bit at the back of the main room with two double bedrooms in. It's definitely an upgrade from your camp beds on the floor 😂 it's my favourite place I've ever stayed and I loved wandering the graveyard! Also: Tesco tomato and feta pasta is the best meal deal item lol it's so good
I watched this video after seeing Chris' community post and I got chills when he said "And she's just down there," not realizing what was caught on camera... 27:10
"For joey I wanted him to get in touch with his Australian roots, so I arranged to have him stay in Britain's most haunted prison" For fucks sake Chris, I was expecting a matter of fact intro and instead I choked on my Yorkshire tea while laughing. The way Joey seems more comfortable in England than Connor says a lot about our relationship with Australia compared to Wales
@LT R Bruh, the most culturally similar countries to England are other UK countries lol. Also this animosity you are talking about is prevalent in any neighboring countries who had been at war with each other before just like UK.
@Dropit Australia is probably the most culturally similar country to England. And English don't have anything against Wales. It's just Welsh are so salty about pretty much everthing English. So it's says more about Welsh and their inferiority complex.
I don’t know if it’s just me or it’s the venues you selected and the way they were edited into the vlog but I was truly creeped out. How do you find places like these that aren’t on anyone’s itineraries? A indisputable wacky and unnerving weekend. At the end it was nice that Joey got to devour a hot sausage roll for recompense. It’s a wonder that Joey and Connor go along with your high jinks because they know tour history. Very entertaining vlog. 👍🙏😎
@Sheryll Bonilla What in Japan passes as bread has little to do with normal French bread. I feel like Japanese people learned the concept of pain au lait and ran away with it. Those conbini sando bread are unsubstantial, artificially sweetened, and way too pappy. I'd take rough sourdough or wholemeal bread any day over the conbini sandos.
@Sarah Ward-Greef I think here in Japan at a convenience store you could get a basic sandwich (egg or tuna or ham and cheese), basic bag of chips/crisps and a basic drink for around 500 yen. Probably not as good quality as what you're describing. If you don't mind making a little more effort you can probably do better at a supermarket. I live near an OK supermarket and their store-made sandwiches are high-quality, with substantial bread that actually has crust on it and isn't overly sweet. They also have a much wider selection of quality chips and drinks that are much cheaper than at 7-11 or Lawson's...
I swear Chris sets up these 'spooky' videos to make it seem like something will happen and nothing happens! Just like those old ghost hunting tv shows and I think that is very much intentional! Keep it up mate! Always love your content!
I've been subscriber to your channel Chris for a long while. I've recently discovered your pod cast as well (working to catch up on that). But I remember in one podcast you were talking about Sapporo beer (which is a good beer imo). That got me thinking. I know you made videos about sake brewery, but have you ever suggested about making one for beer that is made in Japan? I think it would be cool to go around and try some locally made craft beer. Might be tough due to covid but I thought I leave a suggestion. P.S if you did make a video about that then I must have been blind not to see it. Also, thanks for making great content and look forward to your next video.
The fact that you have to put a code to get in the bathroom and that that key you needed to enter the church would be there too does indeed feel like a game, but I wouldn't call it dark souls, I'd call it resident evil
it is more like resident evil, although specifically the first 3 original ones (the remakes doesn't give the same vibe imo, except for the remaster version of re1)
@Paradoxical enigma with dark souls you can only open the toilet door from the inside, while the key will only open the front door and lead you to question why TF it was in the toilet in the first place
god i LOVE when chris covers haunted stuff, last one was that Inn that Chris went to, I've been waiting sooo long for this type of content...!!!! ooooooooo god im so happy
Them: acting like sleeping on the floor of a church is that hard. Me: used to be in a domestic violence shelter with my mom but you could only stay for a little while anyway and we pissed off the office lady's drug dealer. They shoved us in a room together and they shoved my toothbrush down each other's diaper and we asked to be moved out again. So here's the church point. We were with the homeless woman and we had to go from church to church, fight the single women for a chance to shower at one of them, and that's 1 of 2 that had the ability to bathe. The man in charge was a creep who used his position of power against the women he wanted to abuse... Also there was so many genuinely crazy people. Make sure not to make eye contact with Crazy Mary, who's muttering to someone not there and cackling to her self and look out for Roxy, the only lady I will ever fat shame, who, on the rare occasion someone would bring a cake or pie for the kids, would cut out a slice, put it on a plate and then take the rest of the cake, like a fucking cartoon character, would take up 4 seats on the bus so that the children who couldn't defend themselves had to sit on the ground or on luggage, so that they'd hit there heads, and who abandoned her daughter right before she turned 18 because she couldn't get any benefits out of her anymore. Ghosts ain't nothing.
I love how Connor and Chris barely knew each other the first time Chris was on Trash Taste and now they're basically best friends. It's a match made in heaven.
Loved your previous Abandoned Love Hotel video, Chris! That prison instantly made me think of the Prison area from Phasmophobia. I think I'd be half-scared and half-daring-something-interesting-to-happen, if I were in such a situation myself. Moment of silence for Connor's hotel reservation.
“Why would anyone watch us sleep on the floor of a church?” Me, a huge fan of Buzzfeed’s Unsolved where Ryan and Shane sleeps in the worst haunted places: *Now THIS is a quality show*
How have you never had a meal deal? They are top tier 😌 especially from Tesco. Also the fact they said sausage bap just made me so happy as it is one of the terms that I only ever hear when I'm around my area of the uk :))
I think that'd just be two skeptics going "that was just the wind, innit?" so probably Joey/Chris would work better since Joey's a believer in comparison
If Joey likes places with funny names he should go to Pennsylvania in the states. With towns named Intercourse, Climax, Bird in Hand, Jugtown, Noodle Doosie, Blue Ball and the list goes on. 🤣
