Jeremy Clarkson says planning departments 'not terribly bright'

"Not terribly bright people in planning departments, just don't understand what they're messing around with."

Jeremy Clarkson slams planning departments for issues he's faced when trying to make improvements to his Diddly Squat farm shop, telling the News Desk planning departments are swayed by people in villages wearing red trousers.

Housing Secretary Michael Gove has said giving the public a greater say in the planning process will build support for new housing developments amid warnings the shortage of homes could hit support for the Tories.

'Clarksons farm' was so good at highlighting the difficulties faced by farmers whilst being really entertaining at same time ( and I don't normally find that kind of thing interesting). I'd really recommend everyone to watch it.

I work in agriculture and so know and meet and talk with plenty. They all loved it. They appreciated him showing thhme many things that can - and more often than not do - go wrong. I've always loved Clarkson (And the other two) and it's been great to see him change so much, to someone who genuinely cares about our great British countryside.

@Francis Saffell If only...one has to wonder if there is any undue influence from outside the council. I know from personal experience that large developers promise infrastructure improvements to facilitate planning permission. New roads, pedestrian crossings, improved junctions, etc. Jeremy is unable to provide that level of "sweetener", but I think the numbers of tourists and visitors he will bring to the town and village could be daunting. Planners fear a "tourist attraction" they cannot control?
Neil070 Vor Monat
Many acres of good agricultural land are being destroyed for two new housing estates, while brownfield sites are refused planning permission. Makes no sense. Unused and deserted County Council buildings lie empty and decaying in my town have been empty for years and years, while the two (massively opposed by the people of the town) developments destroy the countryside. Why?

He's absolutely right about villager's saying no to everything, I lived in one while restoring an old house and they broke my heart with complaints about everything from having a skip outside to the noise levels from various power tools and even the radio during the day. I'm gobsmacked at how unproductive this country is. It isn't the farmers or the people it is this bloody government local and national. I had the pleasure of talking to a 92-year-old local farmer who is still working on his farm. All he does now is Hay. His words to me were that he can't do anything else. He can't do dairy because it is so hard to do profitably. He can't grow market vegetables because he can't sell them - supply chain issues - farm shops - planning. He has land and can't do anything with it. I totally agree with Jeremy but it goes further this government needs to step away from telling us 'no' and just let us get on with it. The banks find ways to get around this, and the pharmaceutical giants find ways to get around this. Utter rubbish that farming is so restricted.

I have come to the conclusion that the problem with planning departments is that they are one of the few council departments that makes money rather than costs money. They hate missing out on revenue so insist everything needs permission - they despise permitted development as there is no money for them. They love to say no, they love to bring court cases, they care little about what impact it has on individuals and businesses. These people should enable and encourage but they prefer to enforce and punish.

Keep it going Jeremy, by hook or by crook. My old Dad (he's been gone 40 years now) always said - "Council Planners are all failed businessmen." He was bang on the nail I reckon, they are in their own little sheltered cocoon of offices, desks, filing cabinets, coffees, golf, luncheons and meetings and more meetings et al. If they have a 'bad' year their renumeration increases by 2.1%; it patently isn't the real damned world is it!

A friend trained as an Artificial Inseminator. Nice well paid job driving around the countryside meeting interesting farmers in delightful locations. He was so happy. After a few months duty he was called in to check his efficiency. He had to inseminate a row of ten cows with test ‘straws’ containing dye instead of semen. All went well he thought, then without warning a man went along the row killing the cows one after the other, cut them open, pulled out the uterus to see where the dye had ended up. Only three had dye through the cervix as intended. My friend was given further training to improve his efficiency but the shock and trauma of this murderous event meant he only stayed in the job a few more months.

All councils are incompetent and are mostly run by incompetent people who have never worked in the real world, which is where the problem arises. My local council stole £7.3 million of tax payers cash and after the inquiry to what happened to our money, which was conducted by themselves!, not a single person was found to have done any wrong doing and no one sent to prison but still £7.3 million was missing from the accounts! but I can assure you, if you stole that money from a private company, you will be locked up quicker than that.

The planners are the same with anything new. Basically if it's not the same as what they passed last week, last year, last century, they object - too much thinking required. We all need to conserve energy but try telling the planners! 15 years ago I proposed a straw insulated home - the vehemence with which they objected was incredible. Fortunately the appeal system was in tune so my appeal was won and it's been built, mind you the planners are probably still expecting it to spontaneously combust. But I have no space heating bills!

I can never understand how one could believe it is okay to make it more difficult for farmers to keep their farms profitable. If farms lose money, they will end up being abandoned, which means there will be less food grown. Less food grown means more people go hungry. Help the damned farmers. A farm subsidy more than pays for itself by keeping the entire country fed and the rural townsfolk paid. The cities CANNOT EXIST without the rural areas.

Illogical government control is not just a UK issue! I bought a small property, when I got my first tax bill it stated I was being charged for two out buildings, where non existed. So I went to the tax office to report the error in my billing. First thing they asked me is if I had gotten a permit to tare them down. Why would I need a permit to tare something down that did not exist when I bought the property. My buddy bought a house that had a huge tree growing far to close to the house and it had destroyed the foundation and falling limbs had damaged the roof so he had a tree company remove the tree and the roots. The county shows up and and fines him for cutting down the tree and for disturbing the soil, without a permit, WTH!

As a Planner of 37 years I find the comments rather silly and lacking any analysis. In Scotland we approve 94 to 97% of all applications. Large parts of agriculture and forestry are exempt under planning legislation. In addition farmers and many others have permitted development rights to erect buildings etc without planning permission. We encourage farm diversification including farm shops etc. Jeremy also has a right of appeal. If he wants to contact me I would be happy to look at the reasons he was turned down. Equally various comments have referred to corruption. If people have evidence of corruption I'm happy to call the Police and start proceedings.
