How is the 8 liter boat engine a 2 valve with DOHC? Or did he misspeak? ANd the original bore and stroke of the 350GT was a 3.03" (77mm) bore and a 2.44" (62mm) stroke. That comes to 3.45 liters or 211.08 cubic inches. A V8 with that bore and stroke would be 2.3 liters! lol

Where in the hell is rotary? Smaller design and puts out crazy horsepower. It seems people over look the rotary every single time. Piston engines have been around forever.

Great engines, I have a Berkley jet boat, the water cools the engine and acts as a sound dampening in the exhaust ( water cylincer / moufler. When in the water you can distinctly hear the difference with and without water.

William Lyons ( Jaguar) designed the V12 as a competition only engine with 4 cam 4 valves/cylinder short stroke with Lucas fuel injection in the 50's . The Jaguar displaced 5.3 litre as standard but by boring and stroking the same block could go out to 10 litres . Lyons based his design on the Merlin engine and is around 3/4 of its overall size . The Jaguar took Porches reign in World Endurance with 400 less horsepower in a basically 30 year old design engine . The torsional stiffness of the Jaguar block made it ideal for rear engine placement and carry the suspension . The description of cooling a boat motor is not quite correct . The engine runs a sealed system just like a car but differs by having a seawater to coolant heat exchanger . The seawater is taken up by a skin fitting by an engine driven pump to a turbulence chamber ( swirl pot) and pumped through the heat exchanger . The engine coolant passes through tubes within the heat exchanger and returns to the engine after giving up heat to the much cooler sea water .It's normally contra flowed for efficiency . This keeps the engine operating at its normal temperature range , rather than having colder seawater introduced directly into the aluminium engine via a restrictor plate or marine stat , as with an outboard engine of the day ,which had to be flushed with freshwater after use ,before internal coatings were developed . The exhaust is normally constructed tube within tube a very specialised mandrel bending job with several firms in the UK still manufacturing these systems , and the spent seawater introduced into the jacket this forms close to the cylinder head . Without some form of cooling in the enclosed engine bays , the ordinary tubular manifolds glowed red hot producing a fire hazard . In the early V8 boats I built , I used the stock cast iron manifolds which were quite short and dissipated heat well and pumped the seawater into stainless steel exhaust tubes immediately after the cast iron section , that then led out the back , at single points in each bank . I used the 215 ci ( 3500cc) Olds/Rover engines as they were light and could make respectable power very easily , the only reliability mod was using the bigger Buick oil pump gears and home made adapter plates to get more oil circulating and assisting with the engine cooling .This worked quite well and did not effect the power of the engine from its car origin and added a glorious bubbling roar , which attracted a lot of attention sometimes from the river police . A roaring V8 engined 14' ski boat was not that common in the UK back in the 70's ! Back to the race type exhausts , at the end of each jacket ,at the tuned pipe length , a series of small pipes one from each main tube then dumps the seawater into the collector and exhausted with the engine gases out the back . The exit can be mounted above or below the water line . I normally ran mine submerged so the noise was not obtrusive until the boat was on the plane !! The cold sea water is also used to cool the oil by means of another heat exchanger , but I normally just welded in some tube into the steel sump pan so the seawater would run through this first then into the heat exchanger . Just a single coil around the pickup was enough to hold oil temperature down to around 85-90° at the pickup . The Hydro Drag boats don't need this exhaust cooling system and being fresh water boats probably run a direct style system pretty much like an outboard engine with a stat controlling temperature . I'd think if Lucas Oil included the UK in their series in the London Docks , there would be 10s of thousands of people paying a lot of money to see the show !

What about the Lamborghini Tractors and engines? Where it started...!!!!! I knew the tractors before the Miura or Countach......a friend has a marine Lambo engine in his Boat.....built when engineering and motors were hand crafted and attention to detail.

When Jay switches off at 8:26, the water temperature gauge is still stuck under 40º C. So, even at 3500 rpm, I have to agree with those who thought that he was a little rev happy a little too soon. But I also agree that Jay knows what he's doing...

I had 4 DCOE Webers on a cross-ram manifold in a Chevy I owned.....why did I let it go? Anyway, they were beautiful in their simplicity.....pull one jet stack and you had everything...idle, emulsion tube, main jet, etc all in one. You didn't need to drain carbs or anything to change whatever you wanted to alter. When you whacked open the throttles you were met with a fantastic, marvelous moan of power. I swear, that sound was better than love......... Absolutely, perfect mixture!! These engines are beautiful....thanks for this video Jay!

3.5 liters for 12 cylinders is small. I own a 6 cylinder with the same 3.5 liter displacement. The DCOE side draft Webers are a beautiful feature. For the 990 pound, 8 liter ,12 cylinder, the overhead cams must add a lot of weight, as Chevy lists their 8.2 liter aluminum LS big block as weighing 602 pounds - a whopping 388 pounds lighter. Of course with the advance of combustion science over the decades, the Chevy also makes more power. But, twelve cylinders sounds awesome.

Que Bella! Jay says something about the 4 valve being Lamborghini's version of the Hemi; I came to that conclusion as well and designed a badge with the Lamborghini font that said "Hemi" for my Countach QV, but never had it made. For cooling the exhaust, it's the conductivity of metal that brings the engine temperature down. Less heat transfers forward. Works of art! I love the display stands! Never liked the side mounted webers; so glad my QV had them on top like the marine engine. A great trick to long term storage (avoiding cylinder rust) is using a polarized oil that magnetically adheres to the cylinder walls. I use Redline exclusively. Awesome video!!!!!

I mean to have the first Lamborghini engine fully restored correctly is just amazing to me. So much time goes into research and sourcing parts etc. I don’t think most people understand and appreciate the amount of time it takes. Realy something special to look at and hear running again!! Then to have it in Jays garage, couldn’t have been better. Andrew is so knowledgeable and genuinely a car guy and of course Jay is the kind of guy you don’t want to stop talking. Robs engine also looked and sounded awesome. Thanks for your hard work Andrew and can’t wait to see it in the chassis.

This is quite a treat to see! It’s not everyday we see this kind of automotive history. Great to see friends from Lamborghini Club of America enjoying the passion here with Jay! I believe this is an excellent example that shows just how much work goes into a restoration project. And this just being a small part of the process. As Andrew’s project continues to comes together, not only will this car be admired by many but it will also be a beautiful documentation for those who enjoy the history of such things. Many people might see special car at an events or crossing the stage at auctions on TV but not to many know or take into consideration the amount of effort it takes. The digging up the history and doing the homework, It’s an essential factor in preservation and can take a very long time to complete. You guys did a great job in speaking of those points, the mounting block included. How cool! Even the custom stand has some historical value added! Did not know that. Excellent discussions from all 3 of you! Thank you guys for sharing this! Lamborghini history is here to stay!
