Apple announced macOS 11 Big Sur to much surprise this last week at WWDC. Along with the transition to ARM came a bevy of visual changes (we won’t call them upgrades, per se) and the announcement that Apple Silicon Macs would be able to run iOS apps without modification. Not only that, but that Apple would be placing all iPad and iPhone apps available to download in the Apple Silicon Mac App Store by default unless the developer specifically states that they don’t want it listed. A bunch of multi-touch apps and games require touch input, however, and we’re as sure as ever that touchscreen Macs are on the horizon despite Apple’s insistence that they’re not coming soon. We talk about visual indications we’ve found hidden in macOS Big Sur that help argue why macOS Big Sur hidden secrets hint at a touch-capable future. #macOS #BigSur #SnazzyLabs

well, its indirectly happening already with the ipad on MacOS. there is the new option of using it as a controller of the mac. I guess it is a bridge at least for now

As a Windows user I just want to say to all Apple user : it will take time, it's gone hurt but after a few years you will be happy about this change. But it's their is no guarantee that you don't lose a large part of the Mac experience.

The big secret about Big Sur? Yeah.. The secret is you just got scammed into buying ordinary everyday hardware overpriced by about 400% with it being assembled by slaves. SURPRISE!

You have the capability and opportunity to test any of these theories, by simply building a hackintosh with a laptop that has a touchscreen. I've done it. On Big Sur even. Yes things are bigger and "easier to touch", however No it is not a pleasant experience nor does it seem like it was designed for that. Could my experience be due to touchscreen drivers implementation? Maybe, idk, other multitouch gestures work just fine on it and just as smooth as one would expect from a trackpad. I think the mixed ergonomics of an iPad with keyboard/mouse might seem like it translates to a laptop as well, and maybe even will for something the macbook air or 13" MBP size, but those ergonomics don't translate to 15-16" sized workstation level laptops. Additionally, you're thought that you can only do multitouch the way they do it in the simulator by pressing cmd and moving the cursor around, you're ignoring the fact that mac trackpads were some of the first touch devices to actually even SUPPORT multitouch. Macs support an array of multitouch gestures already and have before iOS devices even existed. with that you're ignoring the possibility of a multi-cursor environment to visually track multiple finger positions on a trackpad when playing multi-touch-required games, easily mitigating any compatibility requirements with multitouch apps without compromising the ergonomics.
SeaGreen Productions
Sometimes I wonder if these get implemented for an actual release and then apple watches these reviews and go “well time to scrap that idea”

10:23 you could also use a Magic Trackpad to multitouch and have a cursor like the iPad's which adjusts it's size and shape to fit the buttons it's trying to press. Looking forward to touch Macs.

I had a theory when the butterfly keyboards first came out. They have barely any key travel. They also released the trackpad with an immovable button and haptic feedback. My prediction was that they would replace the keyboard with a giant trackpad using haptic feedback to simulate button presses. The butterfly key was created to "train" us to be okay with very small key travel. Time will tell but that's my theory.

I had the same thoughts and they are 100% correct. The only question is timing. We might one more full generation without touch support. From there they may as well change all the OS names to match what they really are: [hardware]OS. phoneOS, padOS, macOS, watchOS. All practically the same reactive OS. Then the devices can be called apple phone, apple pad, apple mac, and apple watch. My concern is that they will be tempted to shut down the platform like they have for iphone and applewatch. They need to be fought on this front now for the iphone as I'd hate to see apple harm their own platform. Otherwise, it's all quite brilliant and the long term planning is impressive. They pull this off and offer a relatively inexpensive mac -> that would give microsoft a run for their money. So much depends on apple keeping an open platform and enabling web apps though ...

I’m hoping the new design of the iMac is going to have an adjustable stand that can turn the screen into a giant iPad Pro basically, with Apple Pencil support. So that you can draw, take notes, etc. You can then attach the pencil to the top of the iMac when done. I’m thinking the new design will basically just be a giant 27 inch iPad Pro with facial recognition for unlocking too.

Has anyone here considered that they might be adding touch capabilities via their AR glasses rather an actual touch screen? That would even allow older macs that are due to get Big Surr to operate with the same feature sets as a new fancy mac running apple silicon. -(and of course, they get their extra hardware sale)-
Marcus Ahlström
Marcus Ahlström Vor 2 Tage
What if: most of the hardware stays in the keyboard section and the screen only contains a small battery and streaming hardware like airplay 3 whenever that comes out. When you undock the screen it seamlessly switches from direct connect to airplay mode and you could do stuff like 4K video editing or 3D work from anywhere in your house whilst your hardware station stays connected with all your hard drives, NAS servers and other accessories. That way you’ll have all the power you need in a super light and portable package, i could see that being useful from time to time :)

Apple probably wants to keep certain devices separate because that’s what its meant to be not to mention the fact not everything is meant to be amplified truthfully somethings just don’t need to be on everything also they would lose loads of money a touch screen Mac should be it’s own device if anything

Way back before the turn of the century I wrote a web column for a long gone site in which I described a Mac of the future, thinking it would be available around 2015 at the latest. The OS would adjust to whatever size device you wanted to use at the time, and the biggest Mac would be almost a literal desktop, kind of like all the sci-fi movies show. If you’re drawing or drafting a house plan, you use it flat and with a stylus, but you could just flip it up near vertical and pull out your keyboard and mouse to use it for text or spreadsheets or whatever works best in that orientation. It seemed like an obvious thing to predict, but if your head is inside the Cupertino bubble, lots of things that other people think are obvious are not obvious to you. I’m happy they are finally (I hope) getting around to making such a machine.

As long as touch is not required well, I have no problem with it. That said i would hate using touch on my computer, as the screen will become unbearably dirty. Oh, they are coming. Just because Steve said no before he died doesn't mean it won't happen. Steve and Jonny are gone and when Apple makes something based on what already exists, they are like the Japanese- they improve it; not only that, they take that idea and make it work. Sure, they have had their follies like any other company, but they either lead, or they recycle someone else's idea and make it better (like a Metallica cover song).

An iMac with a very small bezel and a stand that could swing the display towards the user (bottom edge on the desk and top edge 4--6" above the desk) might work for games and art but touch screen is irrelevant for spreadsheets, document creation, coding, etc. A laptop with a design similar to the iPad Pro keyboard (again allowing one to move the display into an angled position) would be quite good, however it would kill sales of iPads - so we will never see it. As a user of a MacPro 5,1 with 96Gb RAM and six 28" 4k monitors I am much more interested in any Apple Silicon upgrade to the 2019 MacPro - I'm glad that I have not yet upgraded. And as for Apple supporting 3rd party external touch-screen displays... well I'm not going to hold my breath or buy multiple XDR-touch displays (£10000 plus?). If Apple has a good strategy they need to be more forthcoming with their road-map so that people can plan. Again, breath holding is not recomened.

This video is 100% right. While the merging of input methods is acceptable on the iPad Pro as an extension of its use domain, and could be acceptable on a laptop, it is not acceptable when it comes to a large desktop computer: you don’t want to lose screen estate and make your mouse travel twice as much because of larger UI elements, you don’t want your arms in the air, you don’t want to spread finger grease on the screen, especially when you’re a pro user, say a graphic designer. This is preposterous. Apple running after Microsoft is not a good idea for them. Losing their ergonomics good sense either.

8:05 - exactly me thoughts during the presentation! Why would they design all new switches like that?! Does not make any sense when using a mouse. Too fat, too much travel. I‘m 100% sure with Apple Silicon MacOS and iOS especially iPadOS are going to be merging. On going separation wouldn‘t make any sense: Same chipsets (kind of), same architecture, same app foundation. I mean, that‘s they way it has to be with that and the possibilities are unheard of! I‘m expecting a MacBook / MacBookPro with iPad like features, like touchscreen in the same way as the iPad matures into a real computer. And it absolutely makes sense. All those statements about interfaces where just a picture of the moment.

I'm not sure about everyone else, but I find it really odd that people think we need an app for everything on a desktop/laptop environment. It makes sense on a MacBook but not on a desktop I can’t see any comfortable scenario where reaching at full stretch across a desk, the width and working height of a 27” or 32” display would ever be comfortable, not for 12 hour work days. I’d rather use a Wacom with a larger desktop display. Plus trying to retouch with ANY fingerprints on a screen is annoying as it stands I can’t begin to entertain the idea of working with a never ending layer of fingerprints and smudges all over the image I’m working on. Any time saved in navigation is negated by constantly having to clean the display.
