The thing I love about Brown is that he plays his tennis completely without fear, smashing second serves, coming to the net straight off a serve, etc. He takes risks and it's maybe not the best way to consistently win matches but when it does work it's entertaining as hell to watch.

Any1 remember a match vs Djokovic think is was wimbledon but forgot the guys name. Thinking teremaz gebusvili I know that's spelt wrong but dont think it was him anyway. That was the most unorthodox match. He was literally jumping around the court and diveing for the ball etc
Wonderlandian Vor year
@Turk99 It's hard to be consistent with the shots he tries, they lead to impressive highlights but also horribly botched points. Every once in 10-20 matches you will have performances like this but that style of play and especially without a killer serve (like the one Kyrgios has and uses to his advantage to infuse his tricks into the match) you won't make it very far up the rankings

I'm under the impression he also tire the other players while not using such strength meanwhile. However still, this reflex playstyle he uses is also very demanding to muscle response but in a different way. What I'm saying is that I agree that he is strong and also I think that this style maintains this strenght. But then again, what do I know lol

Hitting the ball where the opponent isn't - genius
Daniel Scott
Daniel Scott Vor 13 Tage
@Severus Floki As Bruno Pinheiro points out, the natural place a tennis ball wants to go when you hit a return is right back to where it came from. It takes time (fractions of a second, but still time) to set yourself up to place a ball where you want it on the court - and it takes a lot of skill to change the pace of the ball, especially slowing down a fast ball and dropping it really short on the court. When you find yourself "jammed" by a cannonball from the other side of the court, often all you can do is knock it right back to where it came from and hope you'll have time to get back ahead of things for the next shot. Unfortunately (for spectators) the speeds top players play at now just results in a whole lot of slogging it out from the baseline. It's a shame - I like to play up close to the net myself, and I've got a huge amount of admiration for "shotmakers" like Federer and Kyrios and Brown here. Unfortunately, consistent winning is all about percentages and playing it safe a lot of the time.
Piterixos Vor year
Wow, if only tennis players were smart enough to figure this out, imagine how good some of them would play!!! or maybe they did indeed figured it out and it turns out it's just impossible to keep hitting the ball effectively in the direction where the opponent is absent.

If it was that fucking easy we'd all be millionaires, wouldn't we! Dumbass! 🙄

@TaiwanPingLord I would recommend reading Brad Gilbert's book "Winning Ugly". Wish i'd read it early in my competetive tennis careeer.

@M C JI'm a former tournament and college player, I would hate to face Nadal, like playing a backboard. I'm not knocking Nadal, that one dimensional baseline game and incredible fitness and speed is just unmatchable most of the time, but not in the modern era. He was not having a bad day, he got dismantled.

Man how many return aces are in this match! Such a cool highlight. Brown at his best.

In the first rounds of Wimbledon, when the court is faster, is when Nadal is most vulnerable. And Dustin Brown on grass is a nightmare for any top player. He is so unorthodox, so difficult to read his game, that when he is on he is very very dangerous (and one of the most funniest and spectacular players to watch)
__jan Vor year
Top 3 can beat each other just because their games are readable for each other and too much pressure due to rivalry. But I still wonder why hasn’t Nadal been able to figure out Djokovic on hard and grass since both are defensive players. In case of Federer the clear thing is his mental vulnerability and errors but Nadal is much stronger in case of mental strength yet loosing against Djokovic is puzzling. Can anyone here give an unbiased explanation without abusing both of them since I am really wondering about their cases.

@Ralki Yes, Nadal is weak and bad player at grass and hard, but he got same titles on hard and grass as John McEnroe and 1 more than Becker and Edberg.

@Vladimir Stanescu I agree with your opinion, it's incredible what he has achieved on his least favourite surface considering his play style and awful serve
Vladimir Stanescu

@Kishore I think grass (although relatively slow) is Nadal's least favourable surface. Nadal lost many times in the early stages on grass. As the tournament goes on though, the grass goes away and the court gets slower still, similar to clay, favouring Nadal (if he survives the early stages). Just my opinion.

You know what I like about Dustin Brown? He doesn't care who he plays, he's not intimidated of anyone and will play the same way against everyone. Some players get intimidated of playing the likes of Nadal or Djokovic or Federer for that matter.

I'm not a fan of Nadal but that way of playing Brown must have made him crazy! It was like watching a tennis player from 30 years ago!

I swear, every Dustin Brown game I watch, there are at least 30 "WTF HOWWWW" moments in my head, about 15 of which I yell out loud uncontrollably from my basement, to my mother's disappointment.

I love watching Dustin Brown play, he almost makes it look like a walk in the park. I don't understand why he isn't higher up on the ranking.
MKMajestic Vor year
He has a very serious back injury that he's overcoming now so that set him back into the mid-200s in ATP ranking. But according to others, his unpredictable style is hard to consistently maintain - so his top ranking was mid-60s in 2016, and by that point he had already been playing since 2002.
