I also think there is a difference between being mean spirited and being passionate and competitive. I only ever saw John as having been mistaken for the former when it was really the latter two traits. The same has been the case for Djokovic, whom John was quick to defend this week.

This is a nice sounding story but a lie. Mac switched in 83, which was about the time many pros were making the transition. He wasn’t particularly late. As he himself says: he picked up one of Patrick mcenroe’s Dunlop’s and IMMEDIATELY took to it, finding more pop and no lack of feel. He never looked back and started playing successfully with him in his very next tournaments. Never trust internet gurus - but particularly ones in youtube comments.

@Allard Willems : Borg was brilliant, but I always thought of any two handed back hand player as lacking in all round natural skill. I actually think that Borg was the better player.. all round. TheMule71 Vor 9 Monate
@Chris White Like other said, it was crowed at the time. Also, it was a time of change. New materials, and new styles emerged. Specialization was a thing. Some players would be next to unbeatable on clay, and average (well, relatively speaking, we're talking very talented people) elsewhere. So you had to beat Lendl on hard courts, Edberg on grass, Wilander on clay. And BTW none of them was bad on other courts, all become #1 eventually. But emergent playstyles were very different on different courts. Clay today seems a lot faster, at the time S&V was suicide when facing clay specialists. Plus, the next generation would be the ones who trained with advanced materials since the beginning. The old guard had trouble adapting, and for John the change happened when he was in his prime. I remember watching him playing with his old wooden racket on clay against kids with rackets made with advanced materials and more than twice the size of John's, and thinking "What are you doing John? You can't match the amount of top spin they get from their rackets with yours, no matter what... it's physics". Later he started using the new materials, but still the shape of the racket would be the same as the old ones, still half the size of what other players would use. At the time of Borg-McEnroe at Wimbledon, with wooden rackets, you had two schools of thought: the "sling" and the "bat". John used the sling, Björn the bat. The new materials changed all that, making it possible to combine both and more (increased size). Back then people were talking about raising the net to counter the capabilities of the new rackets. Taller guys found themselves at advantage with the capability of hitting as hard as they could on first serve w/o worrying of loosing control due to the properties of the new materials. In short, tennis changed almost completely from the time McEnroe started to the point when he could have won everything.

From this perspective, when Novak has won everything, broke the record for most weeks at no1, and dominated like no one before for a decade, this video is the right on point proof that people who hate him only feel so because he broke and surpassed Fedal for miles...no sane person can hate Novak for his personality or temper, just compare the crowd then and now...

Fed begged for luck because Roddick was up 4-2 in the 2004 final and choked numerous set points in the 2009 Wimbledon second set (tiebreak). Novak choked 7 times on set point in the 2007 US Open. Fed also needed the 2017 career threatening Djoko injury and 2009 Nadal slump. Fed’s drought in Masters events for 4 years proved that he was no dominant player. Fed refused to show up on clay because he confessed that “Novak would beat” him. Fed was a non-factor until Djokerdal had injuries and slumps. He just swallowed a Wimbledon bagel from Hurk, the guy with a losing record. So much for grass excellence.

Had the great fortune of watching McEnroe play at Wimbledon 1977 and 1979.

The G.O.A.T.! What a great guy! Born 5 years too late, or he'd have all the same love as Fed and Rafa.

@Nathan Gayner it's the slams of Nadal and Federer which motivated him. He always keps chasing. He had a target in his mind. Can't say the same if he was 5 yrs younger

@Nathan Gayner It indeed motivated him to becoming the best because he was already so close. He is not my favorite but that doesn't mean he is beating two other greats in numbers because that's what he has been doing and is still doing. But by being born earlier might have an opposite effect, the shadow of those two would be bigger and his path could have turned out differently. We will never know, and it doesn't even matter because imo he already has a perfect career

@biff tannen He is one year younger, turned pro two years later, and was a later bloomer than Rafa. If he'd been born 5 years earlier than he was, he'd have been unquestionably the GOAT. Of course, who knows how much of his motivation and drive came from being in those two huge shadows? Can't say. Maybe those shadows are what helped make him great.
