My review of the new XPS 13 2-in-1 vs. HP Spectre X360 hybrid laptops. These are the best laptops for versatile all-in-one portability. Which one is better??

screen aspect ratio matters. dell all the way

for the record, I do technical presales, which means I spend a lot of time in Powerpoint. So a lot of my side-by-side was just using powerpoint, working on individual slides, sorting slides, etc. I don't think a taller aspect ratio gives me much of an advantage for that kind of work. If I spent all day in Word or something, I might view it differently. Otherwise, the rest of my work usually involves doing demos over webex, and for that I usually just set my resolution to 1080p for the sake of the user on the other end being able to clearly see what I'm doing.

@Arthur Walker I bought all 3 recently - the OLED HP, c940 4k, Dell 1080p - and did a side-by-side real world test at home. Today I just settled on the HP. I liked the Lenovo a lot at first, but there was something sort of "laggy" about it. I felt like it was losing focus on windows/form fields when it shouldn't. Felt like switching apps was laggy. And I don't mean significant, it was just a subtle, microsecond feeling I was getting from it which didn't feel like a big upgrade from my old laptop (a 2 year old Spectre 1080 model). The HP and the Dell both felt much snappier than the c940 for some reason, and I like their trackpads better. And though I prefer the taller aspect ratio of the other two, the HP won for the OLED, the keyboard, the camera kill switch, how light it is, hello camera, and the replaceable SSD.

Dell's design is just more appealing though, especially with the trackpad size. And it's better for outdoor use with the brightness.
Which one would be best for photo editing?

I have had this product (the DELL 2 in 1) for three weeks and I have MAJOR issues with it (not to mention with Dell's terrible support). I am so frustrated that I am taking the time to post this on the main online reviews. Don't be surprised if you read this on several channels, this is not scam but my actual personal experience. If you find this useful or want to share your dissappointment as well or vote me up, feel free ! The main issue with this laptop is the auto adaptative brightness of the display that cannot be disabled (even though there is a toggle button in the Intel app, but it seems to do nothing). Basically the display will dim or brighten its backlighting depending on what you are displaying. That means if you are in photoshop, and you display a bright picture, the screen will crank backlighing up. Now if you display a dark picture, the backlighting will go way down and the whole display becomes unreadable. Same with movies : when there is bright scene, the backlight will slowly go up (this can take a few seconds). And a dark scene will become difficult to see. This is obviously intended to save battery but it makes for a terrible user experience. And there is no easy way, when editing pictures, to tell if the picture really is too dark or if it's just the brightness of the display that's playing tricks. Also in some situations, the display looks incredibly dim even at 100%. 500 nits... but not in every situation. I also have other concerns with this laptop : - the fingerprint scanners is not reliable, and it's faster and more reliable to just type the damn password. - the fans kick in too easily to my taste, even with "silent mode" enabled. - there is a lot of compatibility issues with third party hardware : hdmi TVs would not work. The mice cursor would dissapear after sleep if I plug an adapter. The screen also used to be messed up on previous driver. - coil wine noise is somehow recorded through the audio chip when I record a tutorial with screen sharing. I do this for professional needs, and the video recordings sound terrible because of this. - the list goes on... For all these reasons I pleaded with DELL for a return and refund, day after I first unpacked. DELL's support sent me back and forth between support and aftersales. I am transfered without warning, the line gets cut off. Honestly, I called over a dozen times. And they never get back to me to keep me posted. Because this is a business purchase, it does not look as though they are going to comply with my request, dispite the many issues and concerns I have. If anyone from DELL reads this and can pull some strings, it would be much appreciated.

I made an expensive mistake by buying the Dell XPS 2-in-1. I would dearly love to send it back, but it’s too late. I have the HP Spectre X360 on order. Your review captures most of the downside I experienced with the Dell. One difference - I got the 4K display. My new Spectre will have the FHD display. I haven’t been able to get used to the MagLev keyboard. It is difficult to use for any period of time because of the extra force you have to use to press keys. My typing error rate is much higher. The 4K screen is pretty, but it sucks the battery. To get 4-hour battery life, you have to turn the brightness way down. I can’t live with 4 hours of battery life. The lack of a USB-A port means that almost everything you plug in has to be done via a dongle or an adapter. There are two devices I use regularly that don’t come in USB-C variants: Logitech Unifying Receiver for my mouse and the receiver for my headset. Yes, I know I could use Bluetooth but it doesn’t work as well as the native plug-ins for these two frequently used devices. I have to use an adapter which means they stick out very far. I hate that. I travel frequently. I have a backpack for all the things you need when you travel. Not sure how much it weights fully loaded. Here is my point: Dell wanted to make the thinnest laptop in this category. It shaved off a couple of millimeters to achieve this spec. In the process it had to have a terrible keyboard and smaller battery. But practically speaking, if you did a blind A/B test with my backpack loaded with the Dell + adapter vs. HP + adapter, I doubt that there would be a noticeable difference. WHen you actually use either device, the difference is huge: worse typing experience and worst battery life. Yes, I know - blame the 4K for much of that. What I worry about the HP is similar: They shaved down the formerly thick bezels and have created a stumpy-size laptop. Will it have enough room to rest my palms? It has a much smaller trackpad. HP would have been wise to increase the vertical size of the display the way Dell did and give a little extra room for palm rest, trackpad size, and a little bigger battery. But that would increase the size and weight which the marketing department wouldn’t like. Again, I suggest using the loaded backpack test as a reference point - a couple of extra millimeters, inches, and ounces to enhance usability is a trade off that will have no practical impact on true mobility. I’m hoping the HP will make me forget about the expensive mistake I made. I’m also hoping that in a couple of years one or both of these companies will prioritize laptop user experience over specs and will aspire to “greatest laptop”, not “thinnest” or “smallest”.

I have hp spectre 13 2017 version. The laptop is great but except the keyboard noise while you are typing and second need to update bios for VMWare Work station. Now I just bought Samsung 9 S pen and I don’t have problems like HP. I don’t need to update bios and there is no typing noise from the keyboard.

Don’t buy for video editing?? I’m confused. People buy MacBooks for $1,000 more with the same specs for video editing. Get an hp spectre with i7 16gb ram and 512gb to 1tb ss storage. Is that not good enough for video editing?

How are the speakers? I heard they are supposed to horrible but I wanted some additional opinions. Obviously they won't be able to compare with Macbooks but is there at least a little bit of bass (like for instance with the DELL XPS 2-in-1 2019 or an Ipad Pro)?
