Fun fact: Andrew Garfield honestly had no singing experience before Tick Tick… Boom! He got cast because Miranda saw him in his Tony winning performance in Angels in America. When he got cast to play Johnathan Larson, he took a year of singing lessons Edit: I could be wrong, but I believe he took piano lessons too, since he didn’t know piano before TTB

30/90 and Louder Than Words are my two top songs in Tick, Tick, Boom. Not only are the sung awesomely, but the editing in those numbers are excellent. 30/90’s transition to the dialogues and the song parts that are sung outside of the stage was damn beautiful. It feels like someone’s animatic come to life Louder Than Words is that part in biopics where there was a text of what happened after the events of the film. And the fact that they showed the audience consisting of his friends, family (including his actual sister), Stephen Sondheim, and Susan watching him just hits me. In the line, “What does it take to wake up a generation/ How can we make someone take off and fly,” it showed a picture of a cast of Rent is just so poignant. Even the way they ended the song with him blowing his candles while looking hopeful for the future is just *chef’s kiss* The fact that this didn’t win best editing pissed me off

Honestly, I watched Inside about 5 times now and each time it just gets better. I don't think I've ever seen a film that hit so hard, all the feelings of being alone, all the feeling of worthlessness in a society that doesn't deem you essential, trying to balance the line of keeping jokes flowing while simultaneously knowing that the world outside is crumbling and so much more. I already liked Bo Burham's work but this special just sealed his place in history.

I think there were some really good films this year, but man, Inside. The moment I finished watching it for the first time, I immediately rewatched. There hasn't been a week of my life since first watching it in June where I haven't thought about it at least once. I truly have no issues with the film that aren't just nitpicks, and even then I only have 3 or 4. Edit: After leaving this comment, I've now seen the most negative opinions and comments regarding Bo Burnham and Inside in the reply section of a positive comment I wrote. Intriguing.

Inside released at a very weird point in my life during a four month depression I had over the summer it came out. I had very different expectation as to what it was gonna be in terms of sadness that my friends had described it to me as. I instantly recognized the themes it was going for and got a lot of my predictions correct. Weirdly, even though I found the entire special relatable, it didn’t bring out any sadness or higher thoughts for me. To me it was more just a repeat of what I already knew. Now looking back at it, I see the movie for what it truly is. I see the beauty of every shot composition and how this movie can instantly make you empathize with Bo’s character. I agree that almost all of the songs are banger and at worst they’re just average but the music was weirdly never the point of the movie. Although the songs can be funny or energetic or dramatic or depressing, the mood instantly shifts in the scenes after of just blank emptiness and a peak into the production of this. I still have no clue where to rank this on my own list because every reason I can give myself to put it on one side I can use those same reasons to explain why it’s actually on the other. This list is pretty accurate if I’m honest. Here’s to a good 2022

God I’m so glad Inside is number 1. It makes me feel so relieved and justified because all of my top 5 Spotify songs were the saddest songs from inside. I felt so confused about society and my place in it after watching it for the first time. So I watched it again. Even to get some moments of relief from the absolute masterpiece that are the songs. Especially the funny “relatable” ones. Because who am I kidding they’re all meant to be relatable. But it quickly turned into my comfort movie. Something I’d go back to and feel okay lying down under my covers and wallowing in whatever was happening in my life at that point. Something that got me through the worst current heartbreak of my life. And yes, I know that makes me seem very not okay but I love that that’s the whole point of inside. We’re not okay but we’re really trying to get through the day.

Sometimes I just listen to Goodbye from Inside, it's a great song and all, a good finisher to a great special, it talks about him being tired of the special and maybe comedy in general. Bo feels like he's done all the work he can, he's coping through song, comedy and reflection, and it's really powerful. But then that ending chorus hits, what sounds like dozens of disembodied voices come in and find Bo, and you truly get a sense that Bo is being hunted by these inhuman voices, and that his last safe space has been breached and he has nowhere else to go. I interpret that moment as some force locating him and dragging him back into the spotlight, his audience of people waiting, executives waiting for his next big paycheck, society in general, doesn't matter who it represents, what matters is that he truly has no other way to go, that he should come peacefully, the crowd is waiting, and they're hungry for more

The Mitchells vs The Machines is my favorite animated movie of 2021. I love everything about this film, from the story to the characters and animation. It's a breath of fresh air and it tells an engaging, relatable story, and shows that the filmmakers were passionate with making this film. Another great and underrated movie of 2021, in my opinion, is Last Night in Soho, a film from my favorite director, Edgar Wright. I really like this movie, it's a unique psychological thriller, that has an amazing soundtrack and really good visual storytelling in it. I also love the attention to detail this movie has in terms of the themes and mystery of the film. I re-watched it yesterday and spotted hidden details I missed in my last viewing. I really enjoyed this movie and recommend watching this and Edgar Wright's other films like Baby Driver and Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

Tick Tick Boom was EASILY my movie of the year. I’m a theatre kid who knew about Jonathan Larson and Rent’s influence on modern musical theatre. I wasn’t personally connected to it. However, I saw Lin and Andrew Garfield were involved and knew it would be worth the watch. It BLEW ME AWAY! Tick Tick Boom felt like a direct shot at me, a songwriter about to graduate college and enter the industry. It’s a movie about perseverance if you truly believe you have something to say with your art. It felt so personally perfect!

@Angie While I also find the age gap *really* disturbing, I basically do like Encanto and don't talk about it. Mainly because the first time I watched it I had no idea how far the age gap went. (Gotta give a big yikes) Second of all, I think it was fitting since essentially [SPOILERS] the whole point of Violet becoming an Doll is to understand what love means since those were the last words the man said to her. And, at least to me, by the end of the anime she didn't really let go of Gilbert, she may have come to terms with the fact that he wasn't gonna come back, but she never got proper closure and was always thinking of him. But here's the thing, the ending of the show I felt as if it was hinting at the possibility of Violet reuniting with Gilbert. However, I must also agree that the execution on Gilbert's character was awful to say the least. While I understand the trauma he suffered from war may have been a contributing factor, the Gilbert we see in the movie is COMPLETELY different from the one we see in the show. Gilbert wanted Violet to live a normal life after the war and I do believe that he would have pull that 'you can't have a normal life with me' trope, the Gilbert from the show would have never hurt Violet by acting so immature. Finally, and perhaps the saddest part of all of this, Violet didn't really had a choice. While I did feel angry the first time, the truth is that it was only natural for the world to evolve and the introduction of telephones in the movie made it clear that Violet's profession as a letter writer was inevitably going to become obsolete in the long run so it made sense that after she had nowhere else to go (and the Evergarden's don't count since Violet was never comfortable with them) she would return to Gilbert the moment she found out he was alive. While I don't love the ending, it (sadly) felt like the natural conclusion to the VE story. However, I can't pretend the movie didn't happen since it gave me the continuation of my second favorite VE story (first one being the screenwriter one), the letters for the future, and the little boy. The latter one, for me, proved that, Violet did grow despite her ultimately coming back to Gilbert. She understood love and learned to feel it to the point where she not only wept for the kid, she was willing to leave Gilbert if it meant he was gonna be happy without her (But then he had a change of heart, yey...).
Angie Vor 3 Monate
@Ultimatewolf Exists I just strongly disagree that it was a good ending for Violet's story. The shortest way I could put is that, the movie really ruined experience of the whole anime for me that the only way I can preserve my love for it is go full denial mode and pretend it never happened. But if I were to really get into why, this is going to be a bit of a long reply. In hindsight, I think I can see how the film could have worked on paper, but they really messed up in execution. Violet's main character arc in the anime is about her regaining autonomy over her life and mind after years of being used as a tool for war. This meant confronting both her violent past & her feelings for Gilbert without letting either define her in the present. I think the anime ended in a perfect place where her journey clearly isn't over yet, but she's still grown so much from where she started, that she's now capable of leading her own life, and with the undying support from people that love and understand her. The movie seems to contrast that by showing us Gilbert dealing with more or less the same conflict in the opposite way. Instead of actually confronting his involvement in the war, he went into hiding, which also shows us what Violet could have become if she became a slave to her own guilt. Except the film hardly even allows Gilbert to confront that guilt in a similar level that Violet had to. Heck, he refuses to even see, much less talk to her until the end of the movie. I wouldn't have minded that at all if the movie didn't plan to end with Violet supposedly abandoning everything and completely "disappearing" with him. It was so hard to watch her put up with Gilbert's bs because we know she deserves so much better than the version of him we see in the movie. Unrelated to all that, the movie also confirms that there were romantic feelings from both Violet and Gilbert... which gives some disturbing implications in Gilbert's part when you consider that Violet was canonically 14 or younger before they were separated.

@Angie I think it actually was the perfect conclusion, the whole film took the best parts of the show, and gave her an ending that made sense, not the best ending ever, but it is completely sensible compared to her journey.

My love for Tick Tick Boom is the most amount of positive interest I've ever had towards Rent lmao. I never had much fondness over that musical besides enjoying some of the songs, but I always thought that one of the more interesting things about it was the bits of Jonathan Larson's life associated with/inspired by it. So finding out the first time that he got to create Tick Tick Boom before he passed was honestly so insane to me, it's not even funny. Like, my guy actually wrote a much more honest, NOT romanticized version of one of Rent's major plotlines before Rent even existed. TTB may never get the same amount of recognition Rent did, but I'm so fcking giddy that it at least got to have, what I think at least, is one of the best film adaptations of a stage musical I've seen since Chicago. I went into this film very cautiously optimistic and it exceeded my expectations so many times. I would really really really love it if you made a separate video on it, Schaff.

Dune feels like a tale of two movies. I feel like after the original Dune movie basically did no worldbuilding and left audiences completely confused, this one went all the way in the other direction, becoming essentially a "what if" specific documentary for the first hour of run time. And it's a really good documentary! There's definitely a lot to absorb about the universe, and that first hour sets you up perfectly to understand the next hour and a half, where it kicks into high gear. The ending could have done more to emphasize the emotional impact and personal journey our protagonist is going to fall into, and a few of the higher profile actors felt a bit wasted, but I still had a lot of fun with it.

my younger sister and i went on a two week roadtrip, just the two of us, at the beginning of july. it was right after inside came out and we both are huge bo fans. man. i will never forget the just depressing and beautiful experience of visiting americas national parks with my best friend/sibling, all during a global pandemic and while listening to inside on repeat. we both bonded over listening to it and it will always be the bittersweet cherry on top of the shitty sundae. i am a truly changed person because of inside.

The reason I love dune so much is that it doesn't really have that many plot holes, and people actually act pretty smart. The little assassin drones that target the small of the back, everyone using the shields in combat instead of just training. (Not sure where the guns went though)

Dune is definitely my favorite movie of 2021. You covered everything so well, and even mentioned how it was better and distinct by not being a cringe buddy comedy where the character is compulsively trying to be funny. I think it was disappointing that people would give it a bad review simply because “not funne, didn’t laugh.” A shame. Also, Hans Zimmer made one of the greatest movie scores I’ve heard in a long time with this movie, it really made the whole experience immersive for me and just helped me dive in.

i remember watching dune in the theatre. it was really good looks wise but there were so many interruptions from people and we sat too close to the speakers so i couldn’t understand a word that they were saying. hopefully it comes on netflix so i can actually genuinely enjoy it because i can tell that it has a lot of potential.

Encanto and Inside are the same film in different fonts. Encanto pushes the bright and colorful more than the trauma, while Inside is just layer upon layer of existential trauma with a chipper frosting to make it seem more family friendly than it actually is. I'm obsessed with Encanto and examining all its intricacies and deeper psychology. Inside broke me. They're both fabulous and I completely agree with their rankings while having zero familiarity with Wes Anderson's film.

Inside was such a weird movie for me. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since my first watch. It really has summarized how I felt during this pandemic, the fun hobbies I was able to pick up at the beginning. The weight loss journey I went on while stuck at home, and the extra time that I had on my hands. But just like Bo, something switched halfway through, and I no longer was doing anything that I thought gave me worth, I gained back that weight, and I couldn’t tell what would come next. It’s either a 10/10 experience for those that understand the pain, or a 3/10 comedy show that doesn’t make sense for those that haven’t been in those dark places. For me, it will always be my favorite film of 2021 and the movie I point to when someone asks what the pandemic felt like.

@Iminumst Honestly I’m kinda here with ya, I don’t really leave my house to hang out with people(mostly because I don’t much have friends that are available to hang) unless it’s to go somewhere with my family like to see a new movie with my older brother. But I did want to go back for currently my final year of high school just to adjust to the world again since I’m eventually going to college soon which is a…..mix thing for me(not I don’t want to go, I’m just a bit afraid about it). For me, 2020 wasn’t bad inside for me until after the summer because crap like fleas and everyone except me getting covid(I thank god no one died), so yeah I don’t think this movie will work with me.
Iminumst Vor 3 Monate
I haven't seen the movie, but I'm guessing I would be one of those 3/10 people. Perhaps that's because I'm someone who was living that pandemic life even before Covid, no fun hobbies, no social life, nothing but free time to myself. It's hard for me to tell whether or not it's because it's how I like to live or if it's because I've never not been in a dark place. But to me the pandemic was all just a big joke, nothing about my life changed, and I get annoyed how it's all anyone wants to talk about. I don't feel stuck in my home, because there's never been anywhere I wanted to go. If anything the pandemic has made life easier for me, because society is now catering to my life style. I was doing online school before the pandemic because I hated in-person school, now all my classmates are people who wish they could be in-person, but I'm just really glad it's like this. I'm glad I can't go to restaurants, I always hated being made to eat out. I guess people are just different.

im glad you talked about inside, honestly i really didn't like it at first. i watched it after the songs had been overplayed everywhere and it kind of spoiled it for me. not to mention the whole idea of it is extremely emotionally raw and depressing that without being able to enjoy the music and the comedy bits (because i had already seen them all on tik tok) it made the whole thing a bit too much for me. i couldn't enjoy watching it because it felt so repetitive to me, this was stuff i kept hearing every day (everyone was always talking about covid and i was sick of it) and songs i was annoyed by from hearing them over and over, i wanted to hear something new. im glad you explained your opinion because it does give me a new light to look at inside with.

Fun fact: Every Stephen Spielberg film with the exception of The Color Purple (1985) and the Post (2017) were scored by none other than John Williams. Even West Side Story, which had music by Bernstein, had the incidental music and additional arrangements composed by John Williams, who, as of February 8th, 2022, has turned 90 years old.

I can't agree more with this ranking, pure perfection. For me, my top pick for 2021 has to be West Side Story. I know its a remake and just a retelling of a years old story but man, it was such an experience in theaters. As a theatre kid who grew disconnected to theatre due to the current panorama, that movie felt a void I had no idea was there. I felt love and joy again, I felt everything that had been flushed out by the current situation in this world. Spielberg put so much love and tenderness into every shot, the portrayal of every character down to their design and mannerisms. And you could feel for those characters even more than the 60's version, they felt like real people, the high impact scenes hit harder, the dances and choreography was breathtaking, the music was composed with so much love. And to see such a diverse cast of latinos portrayed so beautifully, I felt so much pride, to see my people portrayed as beautiful, man it just struck a chord, I could see me as beautiful. I went to see it three times, I went until my cinemas stopped showing it, just to soak in that feeling again and again. I found my days brighter and me happier. That is a movie I will recommend again and again and again.

Have you watched Arcane schaf? I can't remember if you've mentioned it in a video before. It came out late last year and while not a musical or anything, I would highly recommend it. It's a piece of art of animation and I think you'd love the style. Don't worry about it being based on League of Legends, you don't need to know a thing about the game to enjoy the show, and I think you will probably get more out of it not knowing the lore. I'd love to see your take on it one day, possibly. Love the vids, keep it up!

Honestly, Top 3 Moments In Inside: 3. The “I’m gonna work on this special forever” scene 2. The “don’t kill yourself” scene 1. The “so I’ve been working on this special for a year now” scene All of these moments are so important to me personally, and I can relate to them all. I can understand the anger and frustration of my number one pick, and I’ve struggled with suicidal thoughts before, so it’s great to see someone talk about it in a relatable way. It's so weird cause even though Inside was probably supposed to be hitting home more for millennials, I've honestly never seen something so sincerely depict what it's like to be born in the early 2000's. We're usually just used as the butt of a "special snowflake" joke, but inside really felt like someone was saying "no, no this is fucked up." Especially with welcome to the internet. Why yes Bo, it is insanely fucked up that most of us know at least one person who was groomed online, our attention spans are being exploited at the speed of light, and we have to keep the perfect balance of activism and pretending not to care in the exact same spaces. All of that is very dark, thank you for being serious about it and not just pointing at us and going "haha, phone addiction"
