Getting rare materials from the ground into your phone is ugly. The mining industry is responsible for air and water pollution and the destruction of entire landscapes. But what if we could replace the mining industry on Earth with a clean process that can’t harm anyone? Well, we can. All we need to do is look up.

One big problem I could foresee from this is the militarization of space The time between when the minerals hit the ground and when they’re shot off the asteroids, they’re very vulnerable and extremely valuable That could lead to piracy Which could lead to either private armies defending those rockets or nations building some kind of genuine military force in space to defend them It could even lead to something similar to the 16-17th century golden age of piracy where competing nations have legally sanctioned privateers go up and take these minerals for themselves; theoretically it could all be done remotely too

If you use a magnetic rod cannon (drill, shoot, insert etc) you can insert rods into an asteroid at various locations, then using a magnetic repulsion field you can move the whole rock, since it's stabilized using a multi point insertion. I'd guess you'd just want enough repulsion field emitters to hit as many stab points to maximize force dispersion, and not accidently send a rod piercing an asteroid. I wouldn't use attraction since it's always better to have a multi kiloton object going away from you then towards you.

I think we should just start with moving all mining and heavy industry to the moon. There robots can mine, build and "drop" needed parts or elements back to earth like said in the vid - with one use containers. H3 can be mined as fuel and the low gravity makes it easy to launch stuff back to earth.

Actually the metals we get from space would become worthless from the amount we would have from large scale mining. The more platinum we have, the more common it is. Thus lowering the price. In a business standpoint, it would cost way more to mine than you would make. But in terms of human advancemen, it would be invaluable. Priceless even

05:30 bird explodes on impact of payload landing in the ocean. Albeit grisly, it's more dignified than drowning in a major oil spill, and I doubt these orbital landings will wipe out nearly as much wildlife as we do now with terrestrial operations. to space we go!
drsimons Vor 29 Tage
lol definitely did a double take at that part. Jesus, the eyeballs!! Sadly I think virtually all industrial activities end up killing wildlife, even ones we consider "green" like wind turbines. Earth weighs approximately 5,974,000,000,000,000,000,000 Metric Tones, the entirety of the asteroid belt weighs in at just 3% the weight of the moon, accounting for majority of that is just rock that wouldn't ever get to the surface of earth, the amount of weight gained would be negligible in terms of gravity.

Dear Kurzgesagt I got interested in this topic and went to go do more research. In my research I found that the 'electrical' engines you were talking about are actually ion engines(which you did mention in your sources document.) These ion engines, according to NASA, can go up to 30 kilometers/second. In the video you said that this spacecraft, powered by the ion engine, needs another rocket to go into low Earth orbit. I found out that to get a low earth orbit, you need 7.6 - 8 kilometers/second. Can you please explain why we need another rocket to go into low Earth orbit? Thanks in advance.

For starters we can just put them in secure collision course to earth. We can then fund more elaborate operations when we get a good return from the initial astroids
Umgrut Vor 2 Monate
I wonder... As a start, couldn't we "just" take one of the real small astroids (the size of a small buss for instance) and bring it to earth without taking it apart first? I mean, if it is so rich in metals, it might make up for all the costs right? With Space-X starship being so big and able to land back to earth soon, it might have the capacity to take with it the 1000 tns worth of astroid. Or is this really oversimplifying things?

@Umgrut There would be enough material to make the journey worth it.

@Gabriel Diehl But I mean, picking it up (with starship or a space shuttle) and bring it to earth inside a confined space so it doesn't break up in the atmosphere. So, bringing it back to earth relatively gently. :P

Problems would occur if it broke up in the atmosphere, things like not landing in target locations, or simply just disintegrating due to being too small.

If space mining became a thing, then water would be space oil. Since you need water to refuel your spaceship, use it to grow crops in a vertical farm, hygiene, and to hydrate yourself Water is LITERALLY the lifeblood of every single organisms here on our planet

Guys the animation is unbelievable, it's crazy how much time and effort goes into this. Hands down, the best educational content on DE-vid.

tbh, i wish veins just were popping out of the ground like in dsp, and you just put a miner on them, and you get basically endless materials.

@Roy Huang Being able to predict very accurately leaves a danger still, but for the time being we're focusing on smaller asteroids for resources anyway.
VolTer Vor 10 Monate
@Roy Huang Yes, we don't have a beautiful equation for it, but it doesn't mean we cannot predict things accurately enough to be out of danger. That's what I mean anyway.

@VolTer have you ever heard 3 body problem? Human math can’t calculate orbital mechanics of 2 or more moving objects. So any trajectory calculate for the asteroid is just a guess. It’s not about getting math right, it’s about human inventing a math system capable of handling multiple body systems. There is no such thing as getting the math right in orbital mechanics right now, human can’t even identify what’s right and what’s wrong.

What if, we dumb the astroid in the moon, and mine from there by human workers and also the launching from the would be easy because of the low gravity of approx 3m/s. And the escape velocity of moon is approx 2km/s, thus we can launch the resultent to earth using an electric rail gun, considering BAE systems has already developed an electric rail gun which accelerates to approx 3km/sec.
