The script was inspired by an old article from my friend Tim Urban, who runs “Wait but Why”, the best blog on the internet, make sure to check it out. waitbutwhy.com It’s so easy to get lost in your daily life: there are so many “urgent” and “annoying” things that you forget that actually every day is special, sort of. And even more so the days we have with friends and family. I know watching a video like this can hit pretty hard. But at least for me, the message it tries to convey does make me actually change my behavior. Reprioritize things. You know. Hope it had a similar effect for some of you. Also, if you want to track how many weeks off your life you have left or get a new perspective on this stuff, we’ve made a few posters you can check out. Getting something from our shop is the best way to support our channel. kgs.link/N3Ksfqvp In any case, call someone you haven’t called in a while today. And thank you for watching. - Philipp

@Holden Rowe, oh yeah, because the dozens of other people (edit, over 1000 people) here who are actively voicing their discontent with this and how it affected them are also wrong. You, being the only experience here and representative of the majority, are the correct one, and not everyone else voicing the anxiety induced existential dread they felt. Im offended you think that recognizing that we are ALL in different stages of healing and that this is NOT good for MANY OF US, is the same as you being weak and crumbling at minor discomfort. Some people here have even voiced that their lifelong disability is part of the reason this gave them anxiety, because they recognize living life to their fullest is complicated and they try not to think about the milestones they're missing. Some of us, myself includes, have wasted years being treated for childhood sexual trauma, which takes away a lot from you in terms of healing and lost time. Some of us have already lost our parents, making that time even shorter. Clearly, being a survivor of trauma and suffering from mental illness doesn't ensure empathy for others in similar predicaments and how that illness may be affecting them.
Kroban Vor Monat
Nah man, this video is like a necessary "evil", sure its anxiety inducing but you gotta fight back the anxiety and then this video becomes a really important "wake-up call". And im saying this as a 23 years old dude that lived almost all the time with anxiety on my back. It really depends on how you decide to approach this video, for me it made me realize how i was wasting a shit ton of time with things like anxiety, and it made me appreciate life and time way more than before

As an electrician I do get alot of satisfaction from my job, knowing I safely install the things we use every day and take for granted, making peoples lives easier, and better. It's very rewarding and there's room to progress into more complex jobs from it. I hope everyone out there finds what they want to do in life. Doing something you enjoy more really adds alot of value to yourself and everyone around you. What I've learnt is hard work always pays. Even when you want to give up on something, don't. Do your absolute best in life and the best will come to you and finally never, ever forget your family, and the people in your life who have been there for you. Always make time for those who make time for you. Love to all people out there making their way through the game of life. ✌

A few moments were depressing as hell, but it's like that feeling where you say "ok just punch me in the gut if you're going to... Do it now" and then you take it all in. What I've found out is that learning, training, and sparring in martial arts techniques (like striking techniques such as the jab, defensive techniques such as parries to straight punches, grappling techniques such as the single leg takedown, ground fighting techniques such as the mount escape/counter to a mount, and etc), and then teaching your friends what you've learned gives a lot more meaning to your life, as does setting an agenda of what you want to do for humanity. Do all of those, and your life will be more meaningful even if it feels meaningless. Goodluck!

@Nick maybe the whole point is to live life realizing it's a gift. I'm not saying from a deity or some god, but it's a great mystery how we simply appeared and how existence itself appeared. Nothing lasts for ever and that's a fact, we all come to die at some point and all things eventually end. A quote I heard somewhere is that life is like dancing to music the goal is not to get to the end as fast as possible, it's to dance while it's playing. Hopefully you feel better some day but just understand from someone whose likely thought the same things you have before, if life is so precious live it as joyfully and involved as possible. If you actually care about loved ones then you will do your best with the time you have here. Would you really want to live forever or for things to live forever? Would you not become bored and sick of life. It's that ticking timer that gives things meaning.

I really enjoyed this video because honestly you're right sometimes life is too chaotic that you don't realize the only thing you've been looking at is the chaos, just going day by day doing the necessities. But life passes by quicker than anyone thinks and anyone of us could potentially be gone tomorrow. That also goes for loved ones and the people we hold dear. This video reminds us to put our timelines and inevitabilities into perspective and remember that "if you blink, you'll miss it". I dont know about anyone else but this video and the frog in my throat from thinking about my parents and the circle of life reminds me to show my life appreciation today instead of pushing it until tomorrow. Beautiful message ❤

@Young700 oh sorry, let's talk about the fact that whenever someone says "this generation" basically means that the generation before the person whom said that, didn't believe in them either, however, some great people don't just show at 12, sometimes it may, but most of the time, it happens in your adult hood, when you are developed. The fact that you are bullying people on the internet and saying "ThIs GeNeRaTiOn". and i have one last question to you before I stop replying to you, are you unable to accept a statement which proves you wrong? Or do you keep fighting because you know you are wrong and start making excuses? I mean, I know that you are atleast in your late twenties or early forties.

For me this video makes things even more tough. I really love spending time with people, but it is absorbing me very much if I start it. For me meeting people is fun but also a big psychological effort. I have to take a rest after and because of that my cognitive abilities are limited. Because of that I have really big problem with concentration, working, studying... I have to choose, if I wanna have progress in my life and relax alone or if I want to have fun (for now I dont have any better fun option). What now :(

A quick and simple reminder for working with the calender at the end of the video. In it, the first (1) year starts at your birth and ends with you turning 1. So you were 0 the whole first line. If you calculate and write down things, take notice that the first sphere of every row is the week after your birthday, and that your age is not the number that you see, but the number before.

Imagine living in Europe in the 1920', you left for the us and you probably never saw your family again in a big percentage of cases... You couldn't afford to spend the 6 weeks (or how many weeks it took) on see, and 10 years later they probably moved away, you stopped writing to them and so on.

I'm 24 this year. I've always thought of wanting to live on my own since I'm already working a full-time job. I felt like being with my parents was suffocating and I couldn't really do anything out of my will. I was dead set on moving out until last year my mom suddenly got cancer. Every selfish thing I thought of suddenly vanished from my mind. Those days I reflected a lot and came to the conclusion that I don't ever want to leave my parents behind. My mom is getting older day by day and it's the same with my dad. I never noticed before but now when I take a closer look I can see my mom's hair has been turning white. Her beautiful face is laden with wrinkles, and she complains about a lot of aches in her body. I decided to dedicate as much time for them as I can all the while juggling my own personal life and affairs. I don't want to regret anything. I already regret making my mom feel like I wanted to get away from them. I love them so much.

Good god that hit deep. I think that videos like this can be interpreted to be either inspirational or depressing depending on how you tailor your outlook. On one hand it is shocking how little time you have, but it is also encouraging that everyone else has the same odds, so f*** thinking about the time you have left, think about the time you are in. It isn't about awaiting the end. It's about being the one corner of our universe, that we know of, that is able to experience itself through consciousness, so do what you want with your time to experience it however you wish. I always have to remind myself: "if something makes you happy, it needs not make sense to anybody else."

The top comments scared me out of watching this around 2 am, I sat in bed for over an hour thinking about it and being afraid to watch it thinking I would be scared and broken after watching it and wouldn't be able to sleep. I ended up watching it around 4 and I'm glad I did. If you're sorting the comments by new and see this and haven't watched it and feel the same way I did I think you should watch it, it's not crushing like other videos from this channel. It's a good reminder to cherish those around you and your own life, also to help bring awareness to people wasting their lives working to death.

@Jack - I'm not saying I haven't accepted death as a reality, I just think it's useless. I don't think the elimination of death, or at least the extension of human life, is a bad thing. Where I come from death is not something to be praised. It only causes pain. It yanks people's loved ones away and causes suffering. I'm only saying it is something to work towards destroying. One day we will overcome aging and death. Our decendents will live for hundreds of years. I'm not worried about over population either. We'll be expanding out into the stars by that point and there's still plenty of room here on earth. The only people who could see those dreams as bad are people with no imagination and a subconscious wish for humanity to stay limited by its current circumstances. Technology will change and we will use it to change ourselves and lead better, longer lives without the constant worry of death and disease taking what we hold dear. I'm fine with that.

@BraveScaryThings How on earth does one get stockholm syndrome for something that isn't a physical entity? You say death ruins life but without death there would be no life, without death the earth would be a cesspit of overpopulation of every type of life. I get you might be scared to die which is totally cool and normal but jeez guy you sound like you're really letting this bother you. Death is an unavoidable part of the cycle of life and in my eyes the sooner you come to terms with it the easier life is.
BraveScaryThings Vor 7 Monate
@Jack - that is the most untrue, cliche thing ever. Death ruins life. What you are saying is the equivalent of a kidnap victim praising their captor. You've developed Stockholm syndrome for death. I'd much rather be immortal. I'm tired of things being finite with nothing to count on. I'm sorry if I sound harsh. I'm not trying to be mean. I'm sure you're nice. I just really hate death and I always will. Pisses me off.

The greatest regret of my life is the time between 2014 - early 2020. I spent that time in some sort of cryo sleep where I never changed, took risks or tried anything new because I was too fearful and lazy to make things happen. However, everything since April 2020 have felt like a metamorphosis. So far I've said goodbye to my life mentor, ended my long lasting unemployment, moved away from apartment that felt like a prison, learned to control my insomnia, sold a house full of childhood memories and made extremely painful choice of letting a person go I cared more than anything. I could swear I've experienced, felt emotions and grown hundred times more now than the past six years combined.

I'm only 29 but in hindsight I enjoy most of my life when I'm with family and friends. Sometimes I do like solitude and work. But it seems irrelevant to spend precious time with the same people because if you look back at the time spent, you did not gain anything from it. But in the contrary you find sanity, peace, and reliance in those relationships. Don't make the mistake of moving away from family, try to stick together and help them more than they help you.

Don't let this comment distract you from the fact that democracy has proven itself to be a complete and utter failure. Throughout history, democracy has ruined thousands of lives due to it's corruptible nature. Democracy may pretend to be a fair and equal system of government but that is all a lie. Look at some of the democratic nations of the world. Look at the USA, a tyrannical and unstable nation with a population that has been divided due to stupid political parties. What about Libya? Libya tried to be a fair and equal nation under democracy, and dissolved into a chaotic mess. As a matter of fact, the original democratic system in Athens was completely based on privilege. When democracy was first created, you could only vote if you were a rich man. Ever since it's inception, democracy has always been corrupt. The system of democracy is an evil thing and all members of a Senate/Parliament/Congress should be executed for irreversibly fucking up the planet.
