Nicholas Alkemade was a tail gunner in a Lancaster. While on a mission over Germany his plane and parachute caught fire. The lesser of 2 evils was to jump out of the plane without a working parachute. Freefalling for 18,000 feet he incredibly survived

@Unterseeboot45 holy crusade? No he was out to conquer all of the world and kill all people that were crippled, homosexuals,of other religions, ect he definitely wasn't trying to make his appearance to only be against Jews he was out to exterminate everyone that he found to be bad for his future,he didn't want cripples cause he deemed them a setback, also had many homosexuals killed aswell, now correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I read in my history books, unless they're now outdated..

@J.o.n “Religious beliefs”, do note that Hitler was not particularly religious and even loathed christianity to a certain extent, the only reason he played along with religion was to influence the mostly christian population of Germany at the time and to make them believe that his political and warfare campaign were all part of a “holy crusade”.

I thought from the title this video was the story of Marinos Mitralexis, Greek pilot in WWII who run out of bullets during the battle, decided to ram the tail of a stronger Italian plane, crashing it, made an emergency landing, and then captured the four surviving crew members of the Italian aircraft using his pistol (after first introducing to them and saluting them militarily). This Hollywood style skirmish is unkown to history.

Why would he definitely be getting a medal from that? He did nothing to preserve the aircraft or help his fellow crew members, he did what he would have done anyways, but without a parachute, he just got rather lucky with the timing when he happened to jump from the craft. They don’t hand out medals for just getting lucky, on the other hand, if he had ran back through the flames to absolutely make sure all of his crew mates got out safely in his last moments of life, that would be worthy of a medal, medals are awarded for selfless acts, bravery and courage in the face of adversity.

Nicholas Stephen Alkemade (10 December 1922 - 22 June 1987) was an English tail gunner in the Royal Air Force during World War II who survived a freefall of 18,000 feet (5,490 m) without a parachute after abandoning his out-of-control, burning Avro Lancaster heavy bomber over Germany.

inisipisTV Vor 7 Tage
Google is friend. (and harsh mistress.)
Mark (hc) Hutsell
Well, if you aren't doing any scientific experiments, just go with 5500 yards. The meter is 3 inches longer than a yard. So, every 4 meters is an extra foot or... every 12 meters is an extra yard. If you use 10 (instead of 12) then it's easy to figure out (if wanted) that it's a little more than another couple of hundred (6014) yards. Or, just add 10%. This ball parking also works with the other stuff: liters and quarts are the same, so that 4 liters equal about a gallon; 2 klicks for each 1 mile; 2 lbs for each kilo -- temp is a similar 2 for 1 but you have to dick around with 32. Its something that I learned works pretty well when I temporarily left the US. After awhile, one can do it in either direction without thinking much about it.

The Lancaster was being tracked on German radar during the interception by the Ju-88 Night Fighter and so the Luftwaffe was able to confirm the height at which the rear gunner fell from. Our public school english class read this WWII account when I was in eighth grade in the 1970s. It always seemed like the story was about a tail gunner in the US Air Force. I did not know it was the story of a British Royal Air Force bomber crew member. Also, my recollection was that the tale gunner station had no room for a parachute and that was why he leaped without a parachute. The historical account says he had a shoot but it was burnt up. Maybe this scenario happened more than once amongst the allies or, more likely, my memory of the story in my public school English class is very flawed. Thanks, Yarnhub, for recreating this short, but true, story in computer animated form.

He passed out at one point before the bomber was cut in half, it wasn't until he woke up that he was falling to his death with the other half of the plane missing. Luckily, he did survive the landing with a few broken ribs I believe. And he also survived the war, but I can't remember his name, only his story.

i think he lost a boot as well which was then handed in after being found a good distance from where he landed. dunno what that proved other than he jumped from a plane but read it in the original story. there was another where the pilot couldnt let the controls go and jump after the crew because the plane was badly damaged and went crazy when he tried. it then blew up an he was in free fall with no chute an falling with the debris. he then hit somthing that said "ouch" so he grabbed it. it was his navigator, i think, and he decended safely with him.
